Change is in the air in Washington. But if Congress doesn’t take advantage of the mandate of the 2016 election, America risks enduring the status quo of the Obama years into 2017. Opportunity for change is now before us, and we need your help.
Please call your senators and urge them to vote FOR the budget when they return in January 3rd. If they don’t, the effort to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood (which the Senate can pass with 51 votes) will fail! The budget resolution must pass, and can pass with 51 votes, in order for the Senate to then bring up the “reconciliation bill” -- which can also pass the Senate with 51 votes.
In fact, Congress last year successfully did just this! They passed a budget resolution, and then they passed the reconciliation bill to repeal significant portions of Obamacare and defund the vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer dollars. But the budget resolution must pass first, giving the committees the chance to write the “reconciliation” bill. While this is a technical process, Congress already successfully went through this process in 2015. Unfortunately, in January 2016, President Obama vetoed it.
But with President-elect Donald Trump’s indication that he would sign this legislation, we have an opportunity for a significant victory. Pro-lifers can see Obamacare gutted, stopping subsidies for health care plans that cover abortion. Pro-lifers can see over $400 million in mandatory spending that currently funds Planned Parenthood rescinded. Victory is within reach.
But there’s a big problem -- if Republicans vote no on the budget resolution in January, there will be no reconciliation bill which is the second part of the process. Some Republicans have said that the budget must do more to cut the deficit. While the deficit needs to be addressed, the budget and reconciliation bills offer the best and only opportunity to gut Obamacare and take back millions of your taxpayer funds that go every year to Planned Parenthood.
Your senators need to hear from you! Please call your senators at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to vote FOR a budget resolution to allow for the reconciliation bill. After you’ve called, you can also email them by following this link. Senators must vote ‘YES’ on both bills to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood. Voting ‘No’ will grab defeat from the jaws of victory.
