In a flip-flop heard 'round the world, Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) declared at a town hall this week: "I have no problems with federal funding for Planned Parenthood," the nation's largest seller of abortions. But when asked explicitly if he would commit to support federal funding for Planned Parenthood, Heller responded: "Yeah, we'll continue to look at this issue," before adding: "I will protect Planned Parenthood." Heller's spokesperson later backtracked in a subsequent statement that "he is opposed to providing federal funding to any organization that performs abortions and is supported by taxpayers' dollars."
Heller's recent comments are especially shocking, even with his spokesperson walking back the remarks, since less than two weeks ago, Heller's vote was necessary to allow Vice-President Pence's tie-breaking vote in the Senate to overturn an Obama-era rule that prevented states from defunding Planned Parenthood from federal Title X family planning funds. If Heller were to break his pro-life promises to defund Planned Parenthood, Senate Republicans would no longer have the votes to do so!
Senator Heller's waffling over federal funding for Planned Parenthood should be completely unacceptable to the voters in Nevada who elected him based on his pro-life promises and voting record. His comments contradict the clear position given by his official spokesman just four months ago: "Senator Heller does not support federal funding for Planned Parenthood" and instead supports funding community health care centers which "provide comprehensive care for women."
There is simply no excuse for Senator Heller to waver in his commitment to Nevadans to defund Planned Parenthood, especially now when victory is within grasp using reconciliation legislation that can bypass a Senate filibuster with 51 votes, and which President Donald Trump is ready to sign into law.
Senator Dean Heller needs to hear from you to stay true to his promises to defund Planned Parenthood! Please call him at (202) 224-6244 and tell him to defend mothers and their babies, not Planned Parenthood. After you've called, you can also email him by following this link.
Thank you for your efforts to end the forced partnership between the American taxpayers and the abortion industry.
