Tell Your Representative You are Disappointed that the Member Voted to Use Limited Military Resources to Pay for Sex Reassignment Surgery and Other Gender Transition Efforts
July 14, 2017 - Friday

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted on amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2018 ("NDAA"). One amendment would have stopped one of the last and most outrageous social programs the Obama administration launched against the military. In the waning days of the Obama administration, former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter gave the go-ahead on a two-step process that would force the military to embrace transgenderism. The first phase was to allow those in the military who struggle with gender dysphoria to openly serve in their preferred gender. The second phase, which was to take effect July 1, would have allowed the military to recruit people who identify as transgender. A decision on the second phase has been delayed by six months.

In light of the current funding and manpower crisis, an amendment was offered by Rep. Vicky Hartzler to prohibit the military from using your tax dollars for sex-reassignment surgery and other gender transition efforts for service members. Unfortunately, your representative voted against the amendment, indicating support for your tax dollars being used for the gender transition efforts of our service members and their families.

This Obama-era policy currently allows people like Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning to undergo gender reassignment efforts on the taxpayer's dime. This is despite the fact that those suffering from gender dysphoria have a psychological and medical condition that until one year ago made them ineligible for military service.

The Obama-era transgender policy is a distraction from military readiness and the purpose of the military, which is to fight and win wars. Taxpayer dollars need to be protected from funding sex reassignment surgery and hormone therapy efforts intended to change a military service member or his family member's gender. Estimates for these efforts for service members alone -- including the amount of time lost for the transition process -- would total about $3.7 billion over the next ten years. This is an outrageous misuse of taxpayer funds; nonetheless, your representative voted for funding sex change operations when those funds could have been allocated for Chinook Helicopters, Tomahawk Missiles, and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Planes, which would aid our military in battle.
