Family Research Council filed this "friend of the court" brief with the
Connecticut Superior Court in November 2005 to defend the state's
marriage laws, which define marriage as the union between one man and
one woman.
Initially, seven same-sex couples filed suit in August 2004 claiming
that their right to marry had been denied by these laws in violation of
the state constitution.
This brief argues that there is no fundamental right to same-sex
marriage under the Connecticut constitution, and that the state has a
legitimate and compelling interest in protecting traditional marriage to
encourage responsible procreation and the optimal environment for
raising children.
Though this case is pending at the trial court level, it will likely
make it to the state supreme court on appeal.
