Why get married? Based on the latest research, the real question is, "Why not?" Hello, I'm Tony Perkins with the Family Research Council in Washington. Most people know that walking reduces stress, but walking down the aisle might be the biggest stress buster of all. According to the University of Virginia, your spouse probably does more to cure your anxiety than cause it. Using a special machine, researchers monitored brain activity of several couples and found that when it comes to handling financial stress or tragedies, married couples fared better than people who live together. Cohabitating couples were matched with married couples based upon the age, relationship duration, and relationship satisfaction of the couples. Jim Coan from the University's Clinical Psychological department said, "I think the take-home implication is that our brains are sensitive to signs that the people we depend on in our lives are predictable and reliable." So, the next time you think your spouse is stressing you out, think again.
