So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” (Matthew 13:57)
Dear Praying Friends,
President Donald Trump spoke to the Polish people last week, two days after America’s Independence Day. Reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s 1981 Christmas Speech, he celebrated the role Christian faith has played in the history of our two countries. These are excerpts:
For two centuries, Poland suffered constant and brutal attacks ... Despite every effort to transform you, oppress you, destroy you, you endured and overcame ... The triumph of the Polish spirit ... gives us all hope for a future in which good conquers evil, and peace achieves victory over war. For Americans, Poland has been a symbol of hope since the beginning of our nation. Polish heroes and American patriots fought side by side in our War of Independence and in many wars that followed ... in Afghanistan and Iraq, combatting the enemies of all civilization ... It’s a fellowship that exists only among people who have fought and bled and died for freedom.
In 1920 ... Poland stopped the Soviet army bent on European conquest ... in 1939, you were invaded yet again, this time by Nazi Germany from the west and the Soviet Union from the east. Under a double occupation, the Polish people endured evils beyond description ... the Nazis systematically murdered millions of Poland’s Jewish citizens ... the citizens of Poland rose up to defend their homeland ... Through four decades of communist rule ... a brutal campaign to demolish freedom, your faith, your laws, your history, your identity -- the very essence of your culture and your humanity. You never lost that spirit ... Poland could not be broken.
In 1979, one million Poles gathered for their very first mass with their Polish Pope ... every communist in Warsaw must have known that their oppressive system would soon come crashing down ... at the exact moment during Pope John Paul II’s sermon when a million Polish men, women, and children suddenly raised their voices in a single prayer ... one million Poles sang three simple words: “We Want God.” ... The people of Poland... of America... of Europe, still cry out “We want God.” ... The Poles reasserted their identity as a nation devoted to God ... You stood in solidarity against oppression, against lawless secret police, against a cruel, wicked system that impoverished your cities and your souls. And you won ... Among the most committed members of the NATO Alliance, Poland has resumed its place as a leading [free]nation...
Today in the West... We are confronted by another oppressive ideology -- one that seeks to export terrorism and extremism all around the globe ... America and Europe have suffered one terror attack after another ... We are fighting hard against radical Islamic terrorism, and we will prevail. We cannot accept those ... who use hatred to justify violence against the innocent...
We urge Russia to cease its destabilizing activities in Ukraine and elsewhere, and its support for hostile regimes -- including Syria and Iran -- and to instead join the community of responsible nations in our fight against common enemies and in defense of civilization itself...
Our citizens are confronted by another danger ... the steady creep of government bureaucracy that drains the vitality and wealth of the people. The West became great not [from] paperwork and regulations but because people were allowed to chase their dreams and pursue their destinies. [We] value individual freedom and sovereignty. We must work together to confront forces ... that threaten over time to undermine these values and to erase the bonds of culture, faith and tradition that make us who we are ... Unchecked, these forces will undermine our courage, sap our spirit, and weaken our will to defend ourselves and our societies ... [But] these forces are doomed to fail if we want them to fail ... if we don’t forget who we are...
We put faith and family, not government and bureaucracy, at the center of our lives ... And above all, we value the dignity of every human life, protect the rights of every person, and share the hope of every soul to live in freedom. That is who we are. Those are the priceless ties that bind us together as nations, as allies, and as a civilization.
What we have, what we inherited from our ancestors has never existed to this extent before. And if we fail to preserve it, it will never, ever exist again. So, we cannot fail.
The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive ... We can have the largest economies and the most lethal weapons anywhere on Earth, but if we do not have strong families and strong values, then we will be weak and we will not survive ... Our freedom, our civilization, and our survival depend on these bonds of history, culture, and memory (Story; Video; Transcript; Excerpts: Reagan 1983 Christmas Speech; Cynical Leftwing Press).
By no means is President Trump a biblical prophet, but Jesus words in Matthew 13:57 certainly apply to the sentiment of many liberal progressive Americans here at home. Yet the extraordinarily positive response of foreign audiences (54 interruptions for applause and multiple interruptions form chants of “Donald Trump, Donald Trump” during his 35 minute Poland speech, as if it were a campaign rally) contrasted with the daily tone and bias of the American news media is stark. Meanwhile the president’s accomplishments, despite the daily drumbeat of criticisms and conspiracy theories, speak for themselves. It is the things he has been doing and the policies he has been advocating that have contributed to the rapid growth in jobs, the rise of the U.S. economy, and the soaring stock market from which every American investor is benefitting.
Faith in the White House – President Trump won an election landslide among evangelicals and a majority of Catholics (81 percent and 52 percent respectively). He has kept his promise to be a friend to God’s people and religious liberty, and he has accomplished some amazing things in his first six months, especially considering the active resistance movement being waged against him to bring down his administration. Many movement activists are taking their cues from Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals and even communist doctrine. They believe in bringing down the present order and in producing confusion and disorder as the first step in achieving their goals.
On Monday, FRC President Tony Perkins and about two dozen evangelical leaders from around the country were invited to the White House for various briefings on a full range of issues, which included the repeal of Obamacare, federal court appointments, foreign policy, Israel, and about a half-dozen other topics. The day-long meeting included time with both President Trump and Vice President Pence, concluding with prayer for them both in the Oval Office.
Tony has said plainly and repeatedly that he does not agree with every decision or action by this administration, but says, “I do agree with most -- and I have found President Trump and the team he’s assembled to be genuinely interested and responsive to the concerns of the evangelical community. Trust me, after 14 years in this city, I am not naive to the ways of Washington, so it means something when I say that I am more optimistic that we (concerned Christian citizens) can change the course of this country and turn America back to the source of her greatness. To see this happen, we must not grow weary in well doing.
“We must pray for our leaders, who are men and women with feet of clay, but many of whom have hearts after God. We must not be distracted or discouraged by the increasing volume of the media that has all but thrown off its disguise of objectivity. I never thought I would say this, as a former TV reporter that has defended the media, but DON’T TRUST THE MEDIA! Identify and rely on alternative, verifiable conservative news sources. FRC provides relevant and reliable information on timely topics, but you need more. A few other sources I trust are CNSNews.com, The Daily Signal, Todd Starnes at FoxNews.com, and The Washington Examiner. It is also critical, probably now more than ever, that you respond to our alerts as we work with the president's team to drive forward a mutually beneficial agenda. Now is the time!”
From the early days of the administration, eight members of the President’s cabinet have been meeting weekly for Bible study and prayer. There may be more by now, but in April those sponsoring the meeting included Vice President Pence; Secretaries Betsy DeVos, Ben Carson, Sonny Perdue, Rick Perry, Tom Price, and Jeff Sessions; EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and CIA Director Mike Pompeo (see Faith in the White House; Cabinet Bible Study & Prayer Meeting).
- May God pour out His Spirit upon America and bring biblical revival to our nation – including those in the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court and their counterparts in every state (2 Kgs 22:3-23:25; 2 Chr 7:14; Joel 2:12-19; 28-32; 1 Tim 2:1-8).
Finally, please add each of these matters to your prayer list: 1) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will delay the Senate’s August recess for two weeks to finish the health care bill and bring it to a vote, and to work on confirming 132 Trump nominees waiting in the wings. 2) Socialist health care managers in Great Britain are requiring a course of inaction that will result in the death of infant Charlie Gard without further treatment, despite offers from President Trump and others to bring Charlie to the U.S. for special care. British officials have so far said “No.” 3) The Oregon legislature has passed a law to require insurers to provide free abortion to any woman, state resident or non-resident, at any time and for any reason. 4) This week, the U.S. House will vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (“NDAA”). FRC is asking friends to call their Congressman and ask him or her to please vote to stop Obama’s military transgender mandate. As always, thank you for praying!
