Family Research Council to Host Lecture on Common Core Educational Standards

WASHINGTION, D.C. - Tomorrow, September 25, the Family Research Council (FRC) will host a policy lecture at noon Eastern on what the Common Core educational standards mean for education in America, and federal funding for preschool.

Maureen Van Den Berg, a legislative analyst for the American Association of Christian Schools, and Dr. Allan Carlson, president of The Howard Center for Family, Religion, and Society, will speak about "Common Core: The Dangers of Federal Power in Education."

They will be introduced, and their subsequent question-and-answer session will be moderated, by FRC Senior Fellow Bob Morrison, who served as a political appointee at the U.S. Department of Education during the Reagan administration.

Van Den Berg is a legislative analyst for the American Association of Christian Schools. She monitors legislation related to Christian schools and coordinates meetings with Christian school leaders from around the country.

Carlson is the editor of the quarterly publication, "The Family in America: A Journal of Public Policy" in addition to serving as president of The Howard Center for Family, Religion, and Society. Carlson holds a Ph.D. in Modern European History from Ohio University. He is the author of numerous books, and was appointed in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to The National Commission on Children, where he served until 1993. Dr. Carlson also serves as marriage and family series editor for Transaction Publishers, and as a senior editor of the magazine, "Touchstone: A Journal of Mere Christianity."

Van Den Berg and Carlson will discuss what the Common Core educational standards mean for private education and homeschooling, whether these new standards will lessen educational inequalities within the states, and if they are a good standard by which to chart progress for teachers and students. They will also discuss issues related to publicly-funded preschool education.
