Americans are proving that while the Supreme Court can declare something legal, the justices cannot declare it morally right.
OUR VIEW: Abortion foes chip away at rights
After 40 years and an estimated 55 million abortions, the tireless efforts of pro-life advocates, aided by advances in science, have pulled back the curtain on the court's abortion-on-demand decision.
As a result, support for abortion has consistently declined since 1992, from 34% of Americans who said abortion should be legal in all circumstances to 28% today. Under the aggressively pro-abortion Obama administration, the movement hasn't collapsed " it has flourished. Americans are finally realizing this debate is not about making abortion "safe, legal and rare," but taking innocent children's lives at the expense of taxpayers, religious freedom and women's health.
When the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, our country's oldest "abortion-rights" advocacy group, stepped down last year, she noted that there was an "intensity gap" between young abortion-rights advocates and the more passionate young pro-lifers.
Many of those committed millennials will gather by the hundreds of thousands Friday in our nation's capital for the annual March for Life to demonstrate that America is more pro-life than ever.
These shifts in opinion and passion are fueling a powerful revival in state legislation to better protect and inform women.
The need for these laws is demonstrated by the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study showing maternal deaths resulting from abortion are at their highest level since 1994.
- In 2012, 43 pro-life provisions, on everything from clinic safety standards to parents' rights, were enacted.
- In 2011, 92 pro-life state laws were enacted.
The pro-life movement has also given birth to thousands of pregnancy resource centers, which offer support and care for mothers and their children. Taken together, we see this as evidence that support for abortion-on-demand is continuing to decline.
The Roe v. Wade decision was without foundation in the text of the Constitution and is losing its grip on more and more American hearts and minds.
We look forward to the coming day when this grave error will be corrected so we can build a culture in which all human life is protected and treasured.
