Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Pr 22:28
If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? Ps 11:3
Dear Praying Friends,
Rev. P. Douglas Small is president of Alive Ministries, a ministry he founded 25 years ago. A widely traveled conference speaker and author of numerous books, Doug helps pastors grow their churches to become "houses of prayer" (Mt 21:13) and such churches to conduct city-wide prayer initiatives. An ordained Bishop and International Prayer Coordinator for the Church of God denomination (Cleveland, Tenn.), he is an active member of the National Prayer Committee and the Denominational Prayer Committee. Doug has written a series of informative and inspirational Blogs for Call2Fall 2013, and will speak at FRC's Watchmen on the Wall Pastors' Briefing next week. He writes:
A ten-year investigation commissioned by the Supreme Court was conducted at the end of the 19th century. It involved a review of some 500 of our founding documents reaching back to the days of Columbus. The study was designed to discover the prevailing philosophy that led to and shaped the American Revolution. The court concluded, "... the case assumes that we are a Christian people, and the morality of the country is deeply engrafted upon Christianity ..." The lawsuit originated in Pennsylvania, where a lower court also declared, "... the Christian religion is a part of the common law of Pennsylvania" (Holy Trinity Church v. United States, February 29, 1892)
The court cited additional evidence: Oaths on the Bible that invoked God (to lie is to lie against God); political and private assemblies which open with a Christian invocation (gatherings of the people, public and private assume the presence of the invisible God, who is to be honored and respected, and who invisibly presides over all); the standard language of last wills and testaments ("In the name of God, Amen"); even the transfer of property, ownership of the land, finds a reference in the sovereign laws of God; Sabbath laws directed the closure of courts and legislatures, offices and businesses on Sunday (thus the old 'blue laws,' those rising from the force of Scripture and thus the Church had equal force with state law); abundant Christians churches and organizations with missionary activity and charitable enterprises under Christian banners (we were founded as a Christian nation, a place where those who had been persecuted in Europe and Great Britain could now be free to worship under new Bible-based reforms.) All these are unofficial declarations of the nation's Christian roots. At the time of the research, there were forty-four states and all of their constitutions referenced the Christian Worldview.
"By our form of government the Christian religion is the established religion; and all sects and denominations of Christians are placed upon equal footing, and they are equally entitled to protection in their religious liberty" (Maryland Reports: Provincial Court, Thomas Harris, John M'Henry - 1809).
"No free government now exists in the world, unless where Christianity is acknowledged, and is the religion of the country" (The Founders' Constitution: Updegraph v. Commonwealth, 1824). (Doug Small, The Documents behind the U.S. Constitution)
The key to making and keeping any nation free is vibrant, healthy Christianity and believers who live out 2 Chronicles 7:14. Help revive our nation's Christian roots by joining pastors and churches around the nation observe Call2Fall on June 30th. The Sunday before the 4th of July.
Gosnell Verdict and Sentencing - The abortionist, whose trial gave Americans an inside glimpse of the baby-killing business, was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and quickly sentenced to life in prison without parole in a plea deal. His employees, some of whom confessed to murder, testified that the total number of children similarly murdered, a routine practice at the clinic, were countless. Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion clinic network in the United States, attempted to distance themselves from Gosnell and spun the story in an effort to benefit the abortion industry: "This case has made clear that we must have and enforce laws that protect access to safe and legal abortion, and we must reject misguided laws that would limit women's options and force them to seek treatment from criminals like Kermit Gosnell." (see Conviction; Life in Prison; Predictable Spin).
- May God awaken America to realize that abortionists produce the same results as Gosnell: dead babies, even if they do so with a more sophisticated method; that however done, the shedding of innocent blood is a sin and a crime under God, for which all Americans must give account. Pray for the victims, the lives taken by Gosnell in this tragedy, the families affected by these crimes, and may the revelation of the Gosnell horrors be the tipping point where Americans, already growing in pro-life conviction, commit themselves to change our culture and laws to protect all human life (2 Kgs 21:16; 24:4; Rom 14:12; Eph 5:12).
Military Religious Freedom - On Monday, Congressmen Steve Scalise (R-La.) and John Fleming (R-La.) led a group of 59 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives who wrote Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, demanding to know details of a meeting between high Pentagon officials and activist Mikey Weinstein, whose extreme statements about Christianity should have disqualified him from any kind of counseling role with the Pentagon, paid or unpaid. The story began when liberal Washington Post columnist, Sally Quinn, reported that in the meeting between Weinstein and high level Pentagon officials, Weinstein called Christian evangelism "spiritual rape" and "sedition and treason." Officials followed up the meeting with public statements that suggested they had fully embraced Weinstein's recommendations to crack down on evangelism, including a statement that such behavior - "proselytizing" - would be dealt with and could result in court marshals. After demands from Weinstein, the Air Force published a 27-page document with a cover sheet that says: "COMPLIANCE WITH THIS PUBLICATION IS MANDATORY." Ever since the overturn of "Don't Ask, Don't tell," even Chaplains have been intimidated from sharing the whole Gospel with the troops, the new effort would seem to further restrict both chaplains and servicemen from freely sharing their faith. Over 165,000 people have signed an FRC petition calling upon the Pentagon to protect religious freedom (see Letter, Washington Post, Ambiguous, Petition; Tony Perkins).
- May Congress require the military to codify measures to assure that Christian servicemen will remain free to practice their faith by sharing it; and that no service member, including chaplains, will be intimidated to refrain from doing so! (see Is 28:10-13; Mt 10:28-42; 1 Tim 1:8-11).
Boy Scouts and Homosexuality - Next week, the 1,434 member National Council of the Boy Scouts of America will vote on a resolution that could radically compromise the Scouts, and contribute to the advancement of the homosexual activist agenda in America. The Boy Scout Oath, which declares, "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country... To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight," and the Scout law which requires Scouts to be "Trustworthy...Obedient...Brave, Clean and Reverent." But if Scout leaders have their way, the Scouts will eliminate their current membership standards which do "not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals" to new standards that will admit scouts without regard to "sexual orientation." If this grand organization abandons its founding principles to embrace the homosexual agenda, not only will there be grave consequences for the organization, as there were in Canada, which lost over half its members, it will have the exact opposite influence upon American morals than its founders intended.
Scout Oath: On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. (see Boy Scout Oath and Law, www.onmyhonor.net, Petition, ADF Legal Memo).
- May God move upon the members of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to vote overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the Scout's historic moral standards! (Pr 14:34; Rom 1:32, Jude 7)
Other prayer needs: Please pray for FRC's Watchmen on the Wall Pastors Briefing will take place next Wednesday through Friday (Jn 10:10). Call2Fall: Sunday June 30th. God is shining His light on various areas of Government (Eph 5:8-17)--pray that truth will be discovered and righteous change made; Pray for favorable disposition of the 50+ lawsuits against the HHS Mandate and rejoice that Tyndale House Publishers won their case by default of the administration.
