If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chr 7:14)
Dear Praying Friends,
Christian Historian Rod Gragg is director of the Center for Military and Veterans Studies and adjunct professor at Coastal Carolina University. He has written over 20 books that highlight the role of Christianity throughout American history. These excerpts are from his By the Hand of Providence: How Faith Shaped the American Revolution:
Influenced by the Judeo-Christian covenant... foundational to Colonial American law and culture, the Continental Congress repeatedly reminded Americans that God’s blessings on them as a people depended upon their faithfulness. “The goodness of the Supreme Being to all his rational creatures, demands their acknowledgements of gratitude and love,” the Continental Congress advised Americans at one point, “[and] his absolute government of this world dictates, that it is the interest of every nation and people ardently to supplicate his favor and implore his protection.”
The overwhelming consensus of the Continental Congress -- a view shared by the American people -- was, in the words of [Library of Congress] historian James H. Hutson, “that a partnership between religion and government was necessary, not merely for national happiness and prosperity, but for the survival of the nation itself.” It was the viewpoint that had justified Congress’s earlier vote to routinely begin Congressional deliberations with prayer. Likewise, it was the justification for the Congressional decisions to appoint chaplains for Congress and the nation’s military; to encourage American troops to conduct themselves with Christian morality; to set aside public lands for the purpose of sharing Christianity with American Indian tribes; to officially support the printing of a congressionally endorsed Bible; to take repeated action designed to reinforce the Judeo-Christian worldview among the American people; and, on numerous occasions, to officially proclaim the national days of prayer that, by now, many Americans had grown to expect.
The most famous statement of faith created by the Continental Congress was the Declaration of Independence. In his twentieth-century work The Biblical Heritage of American Democracy, Jewish historian Abraham Katsh summarized the Judeo-Christian foundation of the Declaration: “It affirms that the duty of the government is to uphold the rights of man as ordained by divine law, and that the duty of the citizen is to defend the same against any encroachment— even by his own government.” That Bible-based faith was also expressed in the Articles of Confederation... which specifically acknowledged the supreme authority of “the Great Governor of the world.”
The Continental Congress continued to officially issue public calls for national days of prayer, fasting, and thanksgiving throughout the Revolution. The congressional practice followed a tradition established by America’s colonial legislatures, which had often called on American colonists to confess personal and community sins, fast, and pray for forgiveness, and prayerfully observe days of thanksgiving. The Continental Congress followed that precedent to the point that official “fast days” became known as “Continental fasts” or “Congressional fast days.” Typically, a Congressional committee would select the date for a prayer day and draft language for a public resolution -- to be approved by Congress. Public days of prayer were based on biblical passages such as 2 Chronicles 7: 14... Colonial Americans took such biblical admonitions seriously. So did the Continental Congress. Though the people were asked to pray by Congress, they were never ordered to do so, following the biblical principle that faith should be modeled rather than forced... On Congressional fast days, which were usually set on weekdays or Saturdays, countless Americans altered their daily routines to worship and pray. Congress routinely set the example by assembling in a church for prayer and a fast day sermon. Americans likewise thronged to their churches, sometimes attending both morning and evening worship services. (Gragg, By the Hand of Providence, Ch. 8, parenthetical reference added)
America’s vital Judeo-Christian roots make America exceptional. But since the 1960s, secular-progressives have edited God out of our history, implemented their own ideology, and indoctrinated generations of young people in our public schools. The current national divide is rooted in these competing spiritual worldviews. If God’s people prevail in prayer, the preaching of the gospel, and serious cultural involvement, the blessing of God that our forefathers so diligently sought will be restored to our nation. But ours is a small window of opportunity.
Town Hall Agitators; Organized for Action – Congress is in recess this week and many members schedule Town Hall events to speak face-to-face with their constituents and to get their feedback. Leftwing agitators took over the Town Hall planned by Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R) on February 9th. But Breitbart News reports that the takeover of Republican Town Halls is a nationwide strategy fomented by Organizing for Action (OFA), former President Obama’s organization formed with the remaining resources, lists, etc., of his 2012 re-election campaign. Their goal is to capitalize on anger displayed at the Women’s March in Washington and to sustain and harness the energy to subvert Congress and prevent it from passing legislation to support President Trump’s promised agenda (e.g., repeal and replace Obamacare). The media has shamefully portrayed these efforts as spontaneous grassroots outrage by concerned citizens, not as bands of paid agitators orchestrated by OFA’s progressive puppet-masters.
Indeed, OFA’s manual urges protestors to “go into halls quietly so as not to raise alarms,” and “grab seats at the front of the room but do not all sit together...” “This will help reinforce the impression of broad consensus.” Trainees are urged to ask “hostile” questions — while keeping “a firm hold on the mic,” and to “loudly boo the GOP politicians.” “Express your concern [to the event’s hosts] they are giving a platform to pro-Trump authoritarianism, racism, and corruption.” The NY Post says OFA boasts more than 250 offices nationwide and more than 32,000 organizers, with another 25,000 actively being trained in Saul Alinsky agitation tactics like those learned in Chicago by his ideological protégé, Barack Obama. Things have gotten so bad that many congressmen have cancelled town hall plans, and authorities have advised GOP congressmen to shore up their security (see Chaffetz Impuned; Jim Jordan; Organizing for Action Soros Links; Training Manual; Even Planned Parenthood).
- May God open the eyes of the American people to see organized rabble-rousers for what they are: paid progressive operatives taking orders from the likes of George Soros and the former president. Amid the fray, may God give our Congressmen and women the courage and strength of character to stand up to their lawless adversaries and champion what is right. May their constituents, God’s people among them, be unmoved by the machinations of hired “community organizers” whose aim is to tear down and destroy the president. May God empower praying men and women to prevail over the spiritual principalities and powers behind this lawlessness. May God enable the president and Congress to succeed in repealing Obamacare, ending all taxpayer funded abortion including the defunding of Planned Parenthood, and protecting the American people! (Ps 36:11; 31:23-24; 53:4; Pr 11:9-11; Dt 12:29-32l Num 16:1-33; Jos 1:9; 14:4; Neh 6:1-19; Mal 3:16-18; Mt 16:3; Heb 5:14)
First Lady Leads Supporters in the Lord’s Prayer – Few things demonstrate the spiritual nature of the political battles we face than the left-wing social media reaction to Melania Trump’s delivery of the invocation at a Melbourne, Florida rally. Mrs. Trump led the thousands in attendance and millions watching by television in the Lord’s Prayer before she introduced the president. A naturalized American citizen, Melania speaks five languages: Slovenian, French, Serbian, German, and English. But her Slovenian accent showed as she courageously read the prayer. To believers, her delivery and accent made the prayer even more beautiful, while detractors called her every name in the book on social media (see An Historic Event; Social Media Assault; Surprise for President Trump; No Way to Tweet a Lady).
- Pray for our president, Melania, and Trump’s children, that the Spirit of God’s work in the first family will powerfully continue. May reports of grace and salvation come from the White House. May all America witness spiritual fruit in our first family. May Christ be magnified in America under this president, both by policies he advocates and by visible spiritual growth in his own family members’ lives. May God send our entire nation the Awakening we so desperately need! (1 Sam 2:30; Pr 31:23-26; Mt 6:9-13)
David’s Tent DC – Jason Hershey, Director of YWAM DC and the American Center for Prayer & Revival (ACPR) and founder of David’s Tent DC and a prayer partner with FRC, has given a gift to our nation. In 2012 he obtained permits to pitch David’s Tent DC on the National Ellipse so he, his 40+ person team, and visitors from across America could offer 24/7 prayer and worship for 40 days before the 2012 Election. A huge success, he did it again in 2013 for 50 days and in 2014 for 50 days on the Washington Monument grounds. In 2015, Jason was led to continue David’s Tent permanently until the Lord returns. Since September 15, 2015, David’s Tent has been the home of 24/7 daily worship. But the U.S. Park Police have ordered David’s Tent to be removed by March 10th with no alternative space in the Park system to relocate. Jason’s relationship with the Park Service is good, but their hands are tied. He is asking supporters to appeal to Congress to help secure Union Square, a marginal spot on the SW corner of the Capitol Grounds. Would you be willing to write or call your Congressman or Senators?
- May God grant David’s Tent a home to keep the windows of heaven open wide over our Nation’s Capital until the Lord returns! (1 Chr 16; 2 Sam 6:17; Pa 95:6-7; Amos 9:8-15)
Finally, please pray over these important matters: 1) The Legislatures in South Dakota and Virginia have joined Utah to declare pornography a public health crisis; 2) Join us in praying for students, parents, teachers, administrators, and our colleges and universities across America on the Collegiate Day of Prayer, Thursday, February 23rd (see video); 3) President Trump has promised to help restore our devastated inner cities. Hear Mr. Robert L. Woodson tell how he can do that, then pray! 4) The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have announced their decision to admit girls who identify as transgender boys into the Scouts. Trail Life USA, the alternative scouting program launched when the BSA announced its surprise decision to admit boys who identify as homosexual, is enjoying an enrollment boom. Visit the Washington Update and Washington Watch radio for more information on the important issues. Thank you for praying!
