Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people (Eph 6:17-18, NIV)

Dear Praying Friends,

William J. Johnson, in his 1919 book, George Washington, The Christian, documents the faith of the "Father of our Country." Like a lawyer, he catalogues testimony after testimony of Washington's unquestionable Christian character, consistent profession of faith and ardent Christian walk from his youth until his death. Johnson answers those who question accounts of Washington's faith (e.g., his prayer at Valley Forge, regularity of church attendance, observance of communion, etc.) with accounts from multiple witnesses. One unique observation in his book:

The terms one uses in referring to the Deity are an indication of his religious thinking, his conception of God and his attributes... [In his writings, Washington refers to God as]: "Almighty, Almighty Being, Almighty Father, Almighty God, Almighty Ruler of the Universe, All-Kind Providence, All-Powerful Guide, All-Powerful Providence, All-Wise Dispenser of Events, All-Wise Disposer of Events, All-Wise and Powerful Being, Author of All Good, Author of Blessings, Beloved Son, Beneficent Author of All Good, Beneficent Being, Benign Parent of the Human Race, Bountiful Providence, Creator, Deity, Dispenser of Human Events, Divine Author of Life and Felicity, Divine Author of Our Blessed Religion, Divine Author of the Universe, Divine Beneficence, Divine Blessing, Divine Goodness, Divine Government, Divine Providence, Giver of Life, Giver of Victory, God, God of Armies, Good Providence, Gracious and Beneficent Being, Gracious God, Gracious Providence, Grand Architect of the Universe, Great Arbiter of the Universe, Great Author of All the Care and Good, Great Director of Events, Great Disposer of Events, Great Father of the Universe, Great and Glorious Being, Great and Good Being, Great Governor of the Universe, Great Power, Great Ruler of Events, Great Ruler of Nations, Great Searcher of Human Hearts, Heavenly Preserver, Jehovah, Lord, Lord and Giver of All Victory, Lord of Hosts, Lord and Rider of Nations, Maker, Most Gracious Being, Omnipotent Being, Overruling Providence, Parent of the Universe, Power, Providence, Revelation, Pure and Benign Light of Ruler of the Universe, Source of Blessings, Sovereign Arbiter of the United States, Superintending Providence, Supreme Architect, Supreme Author of All Good, Supreme Being, Supreme Dispenser of Every Good, Supreme Ruler of Nations, Supreme Ruler of the Universe, Wise Disposer of Events, Wonder-Working Deity."

Today, speechwriters and teleprompters help presidents stick to scripts deliberately designed to achieve political correctness, but Washington, speaking from his deep Christian faith, set an example for presidents and all Americans, then and now!

Washington, a Man of Prayer - Tonight, May 7, 2014, the third annual Washington, a Man of Prayer will take place in Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol. A special prayer meeting for Members of Congress, it will mark the 225th anniversary of President George Washington's inauguration (April 30, 1789). The public is invited to watch live (online via CBN; WND), and on DayStar Television, from 8:30-10:00 PM EDT. FRC President Tony Perkins will be among the Christian leaders to speak, pray and commemorate the "Father of our Country" and his exemplary prayer life. Don't miss this!

  • May God grant America nationwide repentance and may He grant us leaders who, like Washington, will honor God and His laws above all -- allowing God to preserve our nation and bless us again! May we work to elect such leaders in the weeks ahead -- for every level of government! (Ex 18:21; 2 Sam 23:3; Ps 75:5-8; Is 10:1; Php 3:12; Heb 13:7)

U.S. Supreme Court Affirms Freedom to Pray! We have prayed often over the momentous court case, Town of Greece v. Galloway, over the past year. On Monday, the High Court ruled that opening legislative bodies with prayer is constitutional. Intimidated by anti-Christian groups, some local jurisdictions have given up prayer rather than risk lawsuits. But the Town of Greece, New York refused to do so when threatened by Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AU), the notorious group led by Barry Lynn, which devotes its efforts to ripping our First Freedom, religious liberty, from the Constitution's Bill of Rights. As FRC experts predicted, in one of the most significant religious liberty wins in recent years, the Court reaffirmed the practice of legislative prayer, practiced in government bodies across America since our nation's founding. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, "Legislative prayer, while religious in nature, has long been understood as compatible with the Establishment Clause. As practiced by Congress since the framing of the Constitution, legislative prayer lends gravity to public business, reminds lawmakers to transcend petty differences in pursuit of a higher purpose, and expresses a common aspiration to a just and peaceful society" (see Momentous; Saving Grace in Greece; Justice Kennedy).

  • Praise God for His mercy. May religious liberty flourish; may we use that liberty to pray and proclaim the Gospel as never before; and May awakening result that will turn the tide in our nation. May the local jurisdictions that have caved-in to the anti-prayer forces rethink and re-establish regular public prayer for their cities, counties and states (Num 14:8; Ps 30:4-5; 118: all; Acts 3:19; Lk 18:1-8; Eph 6:10-20; 1 Tim 2:8; 2 Pet 3:9).

Israel Update - Yesterday (May 6th), Israel celebrated its Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut. The date on the Jewish calendar corresponds with May 14, on our Gregorian calendar, when in 1948, Israel was declared an Independent State. Two days ago, May 5th, Israelis observed their Memorial Day - Yom HaZikaron. The people honored the soldiers and civilians who have given their lives defending Israel since 1948. Days earlier (April 28th) I was privileged to join Christian and Jewish leaders to observe Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day. I was at the epicenter of observance activities, Yad Vashem - the International Holocaust Memorial and Study Center in Jerusalem, where I was participating in a study program for Christian Leaders. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, President Peres and dignitaries from around the world attended two separate ceremonies. Following the deliberate murder of 6 million Jews by the German Nazis and their collaborators, God gathered Jewish People from around the world to reestablish the Nation of Israel, predicted throughout the Bible. Since 1948, Israel has survived several wars in which its neighbors have attempted to destroy the Jewish State. But they have not only survived, they have prospered amazingly against all odds. Nevertheless, despite the history of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism is resurging around the world. Will 21st Century American Christians stand by Israel to make sure another Holocaust will never happen again?

Two days before Israel was to observe its Holocaust Day of Remembrance, Secretary of State John Kerry's policy of overtly pressuring Israel to produce a peace agreement whatever the cost fell apart. The collapse was not for a lack of effort on behalf of the Israelis. The main reason is that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas (Fatah Party), rather than working with Israel for peace, announced that Fatah and the supra-terrorist Hamas Party (Muslim Brotherhood, Holocaust-denying, Iran-armed and avowed to destroy Israel), would reconcile and attempt to create a united government. Instead of rebuking the Palestinians, Secretary John Kerry railed at the Israelis, saying, that if they did not push on with the process, they would become an "apartheid state" (see Memorial & Celebration; Day of Remembrance; Iran Welcomes "Reconciliation against Israel"; Netanyahu Responds to Fatah-Hamas Reconciliation; Cut off U.S. Aid to PA; John Kerry: Apartheid!; Abbas Confident).

  • May God govern our White House and Congress to remain faithful to America's strongest ally and to abandon the policy of pressuring Israel irrationally to compromise its security for a feigned peace. May our bond with Israel be strengthened, not weakened! (Gen 12:1-3; Ps 122: all; 137:5-6; Is 40:1 ff; 53: all; 60:1-16; Joel 3:2; Zech 2:8-13; 12:1-3)

Finally, please pray for the Watchmen on the Wall Pastors Briefing May 21-23 and the church-based Call2Fall June 29th, and keep up your prayers for Christians in Nigeria who are enduring unthinkable mass kidnappings and massacres by the Islamist Boko Haram. The US is finally getting involved to help. Thank you for praying!
