Prayer Targets: Dr. Elmer Towns; Delaware Assault on Families; Federal Tax Reform; Deep State
November 15, 2017
This kind goeth not out, but by prayer and fasting. Matthew 17:21
Beloved college professor, speaker, and prolific author Dr. Elmer Towns (1932-) co-founded Liberty University, the largest private, non-profit university in the world. He has written over 170 books and thousands of popular articles to help equip pastors and churches around the world in the spheres of church growth, leadership, Christian education, evangelism, prayer, and fasting. Most recently Dean of Liberty’s Seminary, Towns has served variously as professor or president of several colleges, and as lecturer at over 50 theological seminaries. He holds B.S., M.A., Th.M., MRE, and D.Min degrees, and has received six honorary doctorates from highly esteemed universities and seminaries. The following is from his 2012 40 Day Fasting Devotion:
God responds when His people unite in prayer together. Jesus said, “Tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49, NKJV). What did they do? “These all continued with one accord in prayer” (Acts 1:14, NKJV). In response, “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost” (see Acts 2:1-4) and over 3,000 people were saved, baptized and added to the church. God can do the supernatural in response to corporate prayer.
“While Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him” (Acts 12:5, NLT). As a result, an angel led Peter out of prison and he was delivered. What can we learn from these scriptures? First, you can join millions of others who are fasting and praying [for our nation].
Second, if possible join someone else in your family, or a close friend, to pray together because unity gets results. Jesus said, “If two (or more) of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven” (Matt. 18:19, NKJV). I was converted because a group of people joined together every morning in united prayer for God to send revival to a small place called Bona Bella, Georgia. At that time, they were praying specifically for sixty young people to get saved. In July 1950, an evangelistic meeting was held where seven or eight young people were converted every night for two weeks.
When Rev. Brian Nicholson did research for his doctoral project for the Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi, he noted that 19 young people from Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church went into full-time church ministry at the time. These 19 were saved at the Bona Bella revival. That number represented only one congregation of young people on that list of sixty names for which the people of Bona Bella were interceding. Just as that humble group of people prayed and a group of young people were saved and missionaries went into all the world, so you can change the world through your prayer and fasting. Just as God transformed Bona Bella, Georgia, He can transform the entire United States if enough people join together in intercessory prayer.
- Lord, I ask that many who are fasting and praying will be effective.
- Lord, we ask for You to change the world through our prayers.
- Lord, we ask You to save our nation.
America is at a tipping point and God is our only hope! The question is: Will God’s people be salt and light? Will we repent of our disobedience, obey Christ, and passionately reach our fellow citizens with the Good News? Will we baptize and teach them to observe all things Christ has commanded us? Will he be with our nation if we don’t (Mt 28:18-20)? Will we repent and fulfill the great commission in our own Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria while we have time?
Parental Rights Denied in Delaware’s Public Schools – In many parts of the country, public schools have become much more dangerous places. The greatest danger does not come from the threat of the intrusion of mass murderers, but from state educators and authorities determined to indoctrinate the children entrusted to them with immoral, anti-Christian, anti-American, progressive ideology—much of this without parents’ knowledge or consent. Delaware Governor Carney directed the Delaware Department of Education (DOE) to deal with discrimination in the schools. The DOE has taken the opportunity to push the whole sexual identity struggle taking place across the nation to a new level. The Delaware DOE has issued a letter outlining its new regulation allowing school children, without their parents’ consent or notification, to choose their own sexual identity in school (without regard to the sex with which they were born) and to similarly choose their racial identity. The DOE’s expressed motive is to help some children avoid bullying by classmates and to prevent them from facing abuse from their parents for “coming out” as homosexual, transgender, or choosing to identify as another race. Children who self-identify as transgender will have the option to be called a name of their choosing other than their given name.
Of course, this is an assault against God and his created order as well as parental rights. Not surprisingly, Delaware parents are not happy. But whether they will act with sufficient strength to protect their children remains to be seen. Some members of the state legislature are declaring that the regulation is not in keeping with Delaware law and disregards the legislature. Citizens have until December 4 to express their comments on this matter. If you have family or friends in Delaware, make sure they are aware of what’s happening and encourage them to speak out. This is a bizarre demonstration of contempt by the Delaware DOE for the God-given rights of parents and a direct assault on the sanctity, privacy, God-given authority, and responsibility of every Delaware family. Yet sadly, this action is consistent with the sexual anarchist ideology that has been trending in too many states (see Delaware, Beware, of Kids Choosing Their own Race; Parents Being Ignored; Text of Proposed Regulation; Delaware Lawmakers React).
- May God-fearing residents of Delaware arise and reject these bizarre measures being included in school regulatory policy. May God and Delaware parents intervene to protect the children of this original American state. May the line against this kind of nonsense be drawn here! (Neh 4:14; Josh 24:15; Pr 28:4; Jer 10:2; Acts 5:29; Eph 6:4)
Tax Reform – The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on its version of President Trump’s tax reform bill on Thursday. It is expected to easily pass without amendments. The U.S. Senate bill is different, however. The Senate bill will include a measure to repeal the Obamacare individual mandate, which currently requires all Americans to purchase health insurance or pay a penalty which is enforced by the IRS. Conservative House member Mark Walker (R-N.C.), who heads the Republican Study Committee, had advocated for the House bill to include an equivalent measure. Tony Perkins called the House bill a measure “that increases the child tax credit, expands education savings accounts to include unborn children, provides for free speech fairness for all nonprofits including churches and faith based groups (repeals most of the Johnson Amendment), removes most marriage penalties and includes an adoption tax credit.” The House version includes a $1,600 child tax credit, while the Senate amazingly doubled the benefit from the current code to $2,000 per child. FRC played a significant role in the enactment of the original family-friendly Child Tax Credit of $500 in 1996 and the doubling of the Child Tax Credit to $1,000 (its present level) in President Bush’s 2001 Tax Reform legislation. The Senate Bill omits any repeal of the Johnson Amendment, which places restraints on pastors and churches via IRS threats of losing their tax-exempt status. After the Senate passes its version, the two bills will go to a Senate/House Conference Committee for reconciliation (see Boost for Families Free Speech; Abortion Advocate oppose Education Accounts for the Unborn).
- Pray that the Senate bill will pass with bipartisan support. May the conferees produce a final bill that will keep the conservative shape of the bill intact and may it pass Congress with bipartisan support and be signed by the president before Christmas, as hoped. (Lev 25:10; 1 Sam 8: all; Mt 22:16-21; Rom 13:1-7)
Thanksgiving is just a week away. Please let your pastor know about FRC Vice President Dr. Kenyn Cureton’s special Thanksgiving helps for Pastors: a November 2017 Sermon help: "Thanksgiving: Uniquely American Holiday", a Thanksgiving PowerPoint, and special Thanksgiving Church Bulletin Insert.
Finally, please add these two matters to your prayer list. 1) My friend and colleague, FRC Senior Fellow Peter Sprigg, sent around this 2016 story. It illustrates the kind of ideology, personnel, and policies that the Obama administration left President Trump and his appointees to deal with, which is often referred to as the still entrenched “deep state” or “swamp.” Pray especially for the State Department and the Department of Justice, that AG Jeff Sessions and Secretary Tillerson will have divine guidance and courage to make the changes they need to make in their agencies. 2) With allegations flying and voters trying to find their way in the Alabama U.S. Senate race, pray that God’s will be done!
