In Lake City, Arkansas, kids can invite anyone they want to graduation--except God.
Hello, I'm Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. It's easy to scare officials at Riverside School District. Just mention the word "prayer" and watch them run! That's what happened when a sixth grader offered to give the blessing at this year's graduation. When a parent complained to the Freedom From Religion Foundation, their attorneys threatened to sue. Instead of investigating, the District is canceling the event altogether! Mom Kelly Adams was furious. "As Christians [in] a Christian town," she said, "I think there were a lot of people hurt that our rights were taken away." If the District looked deeper, they'd have learned that this is an extremist group that intimidates small towns with legal lies. Most schools are too afraid to stand up to them in court--which is a shame, because the Foundation almost always loses. In this case, the only ones losing are the students--who can't get their tassel without a tussle over faith.
