Ask any parent of a disabled child and they'll tell you: special needs can be a special gift. Hello, I'm Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. There may be unplanned pregnancies, but there are almost never unwanted ones. Virginia's Father Vander Woude found that out when he counseled a couple who was having a Down syndrome baby. When they decided to abort, the priest begged them to deliver the child if he could find a family to adopt him. On Facebook, he asked anyone interested in taking the child to contact the church the next morning. From the second the parish opened, said Martha Drennan, the church was flooded with messages from people all around the world who wanted to adopt the baby. More than 900 emails later, an adoption agency thinks it's found the perfect match. "It was a beautiful witness," Martha said quietly, "that so many people wanted this child and believed in the dignity of that child--Down syndrome or not."
