Just because you're pro-choice doesn't mean you're anti-regulation! Hello, I'm Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. Banning abortion at 20 weeks may be "extreme" to President Obama--but it's not to the country he leads. In a new poll by the liberal Huffington Post, Americans overwhelmingly support the idea of outlawing abortion at the five month mark, when babies feel pain. Seventy percent of people who are pro-choice in some situations said they favored measures like Texas's. Even they can recognize the inhumanity of aborting babies who feel excruciating pain. There's also majority on both sides who believe in 24-hour waiting periods, banning partial-birth abortion and late-term abortion--and, in a minor's case, getting a mom or dad's okay. Of course, none of this seems to square with the debates in Washington, but it might explain why pro-life laws are so popular in the states. In the abortion debate, it turns out that common ground isn't so uncommon after all!
