Movie Slump Sends Hollywood ReelingHollywood's biggest flop may be its own ticket sales! Hello, I'm Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. People aren't going to as many movies these days--and who can blame them? As far as Hollywood is concerned, it's not art if it doesn't offend! Last year, box office sales were down a half-billion dollars-a new 16-year low for U.S. theaters. Some people blame the economy, but others think it's reflection on how out of touch Hollywood is with audiences. Studios insist on pumping out more R-rated movies, even though they constantly underperform at the box office. In 2011, Hollywood only released 18 G-rated movies, but they earned three to five times more than the R-rated competition. Ted Baehr, the founder of MovieGuide, says that audiences want "to see, rent and buy entertaining movies with Christian, biblical values that they can show their whole family." They don't want to spend two hours covering their kids' eyes. So if producers want to boost sales, scaling back adult themes may be just the ticket. |
