On Math Tests, Intact Families Equal SuccessIf you want your kids to do well in math, don't multiply their problems at home! Hello, I'm Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. If your marriage passes the test, chances are your kids will pass theirs too! In FRC's latest Mapping America, Dr. Pat Fagan shows that children who come from intact married families score a lot higher on math and verbal tests than their peers. In some cases, it can mean up to a 23-point difference. Kids from single-parent homes ranked in the 38th percentile, but their friends from traditional homes scored in the 58th. The same holds true for kids that worship regularly. They perform almost 10% better than the ones who never go to church at all. And it's not just math and science scores that suffer from broken homes. It's the kids' grades, graduation rates, behavior, and even college acceptance. Of course, just because you're divorced doesn't mean your child is doomed to fail. But division at home can sure subtract from achievement at school! |
