Meriam Ibrahim Still in Sudan, Intervention by U.S. Needed

Dear Secretary Kerry,

We rejoice with those around the world who care about human rights over the court-ordered release of Meriam Ibrahim, who had previously been held in prison with her toddler and newborn as she awaited a sentence of flogging and execution for failure to renounce her Christian faith. However, Sudanese authorities detained Meriam and her family at the airport as they sought to leave Sudan, and have still not been permitted to exit the country. Given the danger Meriam still faces, it is imperative that the U.S. continue to call for her freedom and safety to leave Sudan.

The State Department must make it abundantly clear that it will hold Sudanese officials responsible for the safety and well-being of Meriam and her family. Meriam’s husband, Daniel Wani, is an American citizen, which makes Meriam’s two children eligible for U.S. citizenship. We urge you to do all in your power as Secretary of State to expedite an offer of safe haven in the United States for Meriam and her children. Furthermore, we ask you to direct the U.S. Embassy in Sudan to continue assisting Mr. Wani and his family with the practical support necessary for their safety.
