Prayer Targets: The Biblical View of Marriage and Human Sexuality; Military Transgender Policy Reversed
July 26, 2017
I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. (Psalm 44:6-7)
Dear Praying Friends,
The late Dr. Adrian Rogers, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn., was a man of courage and conviction. He did not shy away from difficult issues. Love Worth Finding is keeping Dr. Rogers’ grace-and-truth filled preaching alive. His strong, biblical faith statement on marriage and human sexuality is worthy of emulation:
Marriage and Human Sexuality - Preamble: We believe that all matters of faith and conduct must be evaluated based on Holy Scripture, which is our inspired, infallible, and inerrant guide (2 Tim 3:16–17). Since the Holy Bible does speak to the nature of human beings and their sexuality, it is imperative that we correctly understand and articulate what the Bible teaches on these matters. We are committed to the home and family as set forth in Holy Scripture. We believe God has ordained and created marriage to exist between one man and one woman, with absolute marital fidelity. The Bible sets forth specific home and family values, which include the distinct roles of husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, and children. It is our firm conviction that we uphold the dignity of each individual as we embrace the unchanging and longstanding principles of scriptural truth.
Religious Beliefs: Based on Holy Scripture and the historic moral teaching of the Church…
Marriage - [We] define marriage as the permanent, exclusive, comprehensive, and conjugal “one flesh” union of one man and one woman, intrinsically ordered to procreation and biological family, and in furtherance of the moral, spiritual, and public good of binding father, mother, and child (Gen 1:27-28, 2:18-24, Mt 19:4-9, Mk 10:5-9, Eph 5:31-33).
Sexual Immorality - [We] believe that sexual acts outside marriage are prohibited because they are sinful. Consequently, [we], our employees and volunteers must resist and refrain from any and all sexual acts outside marriage — including but not limited to adultery, fornication, incest, zoophilia, pornography, prostitution, voyeurism, pedophilia, exhibitionism, sodomy, polygamy, polyamory, sologamy, or same-sex sexual acts. (Ex 20:14, Lev 18:7-23, 20:10-21, Dt 5:18, Mt 15:19, 5:27-28, 15:19, Rom 1:26-27, 1 Cor 6:9-13, 1 Th 4:3, Heb 13:4, Gal 5:19, Eph 4:17-19, Col 3:5)
Sexual Identity - [We] believe that God created mankind in His image: male (man) and female (woman), sexually different but with equal personal dignity. Consequently, [our] employees and volunteers must affirm their biological sex and refrain from any and all attempts to physically change, alter, or disagree with their predominant biological sex — including but not limited to elective sex-reassignment, transvestite, transgender, or non-binary “genderqueer” acts or conduct. (Gen 1:26-28, Rom 1:26-32, 1 Cor 6:9-11)
Sexual Orientation - [We] believe that God created and ordered human sexuality to the permanent, exclusive, comprehensive, and conjugal “one flesh” union of man and woman, intrinsically ordered to procreation and biological family, and in furtherance of the moral, spiritual, and public good of binding father, mother, and child. Consequently employees and volunteers must affirm the sexual complementarity of man and woman and resist any and all same-sex sexual attractions and refrain from any and all same-sex sexual acts or conduct, which are intrinsically disordered and sinful. (Gen 1:27, Gen 2:24, Mt 19:4-6, Mk 10:5-9, Rom 1:26-27, 1 Cor 6:9-11, Eph 5:25-27, Rev 19:7-9, 21:2)
Sexual Redemption - [We] believe that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and should seek redemption through confession, repentance, and faith in Jesus Christ. Consequently, [our] employees and volunteers must welcome and treat with respect, compassion, and sensitivity all who experience same-sex attractions or confess sexually immoral acts but are committed to resisting sexual temptation, refraining from sexual immorality, and conforming their behavior to [this] Statement of Faith. (Mt 11:28-30, Rom 3:23, Eph 2:1-10, I Cor 10:13, Heb 2:17-18, 4:14-16)
Celibacy - [We] believe that Holy Scripture grants two life-enhancing options for human sexual behavior: (1) the conjugal “one flesh” marital union of one man and one woman, and (2) celibacy. Either is a gift from God, given as He wills for His glory and the good of those who receive and rejoice in His gift to them. Celibacy and faithful singleness is to be celebrated and affirmed within the [this ministry]. (Gen 1:27-28; 2:18, 21-24; Mt 19:4-6; Mk 10:5-8; Heb 13:4; 1 Cor 7:1-8; Mt 19:12; 1 Cor 12:12-13; Rom 12:10; 1 Tim 5:1-2)
Holy Scripture - Marriage and Human Sexuality: Gen 1:26-28; 2:18-24; 19:5-10; Ex 20:14; Lev 18:7-23; 20:10-21; Dt 5:18; Jdg 9:22-24; Mt 5:27-28; 15:19; 19:4-9; Mk 10:5-9; Rom 1:26-27; 1 Cor 6:9-13; 5:21; Gal 5:19; Eph 4:17-19; 5:25-27; 5:31; Col 3:5; 1 Th 4:3; Heb 13:4; 1 Tim 1:8-10; Jude 1:7; Rev 19:7-9; 21:2
Application: All our employees and volunteers must affirm and adhere to this Doctrinal and Religious Absolute statement on marriage and human sexuality to qualify for involvement with this ministry. This is necessary to accomplish our religious mission, goals and purpose. Behavior or counter-witnessing… will impede and burden our integrity and religious mission. We believe that God’s grace can wipe the slate of guilt and sin, though the consequences are still incurred.
Authority: The Bible is the inspired, infallible, and inerrant Word of God, acting as the source of authority over morality, our beliefs, Christian lifestyle and conduct. [We] are charged with the ministerial responsibility of Biblical interpretation and promulgating religious policy. On behalf of the ministry, [Our Board] will determine life application as well as final matters relating to organizational theology, philosophy, Christian practice, faith, divine truth, morality, and theological and doctrinal resolutions (see Love Worth Finding, Statement of Faith and Beliefs).
The sexual revolution has done epochal damage to people, families, and institutions and could bring down our entire nation. Christians must live and proclaim God’s plain truth without compromise. Only God-sent revival and God’s healing hand can restore what our sins have brought upon this nation.
Transgender Military Policy Reversed! – News broke this morning that President Trump is rolling back the Obama administration’s ill-conceived plan to force the mainstreaming of confused persons who self-identify as “transgender” in the U.S. military. Why is this so important? Up until now, many leaders in the military were simply ignoring the facts, the science, and the glaring problems their transgender policy would have posed. Apparently, it wasn’t even on their radar until FRC President Tony Perkins, himself a Marine Corps veterans, and our team went to work. Tony has had numerous conversations with the administration and members of Congress, FRC’s Peter Sprigg has written about the enormous fiscal impact, and Executive Vice President Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin has written and commented extensively on the policy’s negative impact on standards (good order and discipline), readiness, unit cohesion, morale and recruitment, etc.
Thankfully, key members of Congress agreed. Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would have at least stopped sex-change operations from becoming a standard military medical benefit. It failed—every voting Democrat and 24 Republicans voting against it, igniting a public firestorm that lit up the Congressional switchboard. Tony Perkins wrote, “Those Republicans [who voted against the amendment] are almost certainly having second thoughts now, after hearing from their constituents, who can’t believe the GOP is letting Obama’s radicalism continue to dictate military policy!” Tony Perkins concluded: “President Obama is gone. It’s time his extremism is too.”
As a result, public reaction re energized Rep. Vicky Hartzler, Reps. Scott Perry (R-Pa.), Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), and others, who were more determined than ever to protect the military, and to preserve our future national security. Thankfully, with the threat of opposing the NDAA and similarly the Make America Secure Act (the military appropriations bill), conservatives in the U.S. House got the Trump administration’s attention.
In fact, President Trump tweeted this morning that after consulting “with my generals and military experts,” the U.S. government “will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.” The U.S. military, he said, “must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
In a press release, Tony Perkins stated: “I applaud President Trump for keeping his promise to return to military priorities -- and not continue the social experimentation of the Obama era that has crippled our nation’s military. The military can now focus its efforts on preparing to fight and win wars rather than being used to advance the Obama social agenda.
“President Trump recognizes what the nation’s military leadership and the American people realize, this Obama policy makes no sense.
“The last thing we should be doing is diverting billions of dollars from mission-critical training to something as controversial as gender reassignment surgery. However, the cost to readiness, recruitment, retention, morale and cohesion would have been even greater under the Obama policy. As our nation faces serious national security threats, our troops shouldn’t be forced to endure hours of transgender ‘sensitivity’ classes and politically-correct distractions like this one.
“Now that we are assured that the Defense Department has its fiscal priorities in order, Family Research Council withdraws our opposition to increasing the budget of the Department of Defense through the ‘Make America Secure Appropriations Act’ and looks forward to seeing that legislation pass,” concluded Perkins.
So please take a moment to thank President Trump for his promise to reverse Obama’s morally and fiscally insane policy in our Armed Forces by clicking here.
Oh God, we thank you for President Trump’s leadership. Your word says that “the heart of the King is in the hand of the Lord” and we see some evidence of that in decisions like this. We humbly ask that the “silent majority” would rise up in vocal support of this common sense and righteous stand. Thank you for those political warriors who joined with Tony to fight for what is right and turn this evil back. We pray for our military leaders that you would guide them to fashion our Armed Forces such that You can bless them. Send revival within our fighting forces! May our troops be armed with righteousness when they go forth to battle. Continue to guide the White House, Congress, and military leaders. Let them do Your biddin g. Go before them supernaturally to do what natural weapons cannot, crown their efforts with success, and may they give you glory! In Jesus Name! (Gen 1:27; Dt 28: all; 1 Chr 12:32-33; 2 Chr 20:1-25; Ps 20:7; 44: all; 119:126; 133: all; Pr 5: all; Is 52:11b-13; Jon 3:1-10; Lk 14:31-33)
Finally, Yesterday, the U.S. Senate passed the motion to proceed to debate its version of the American Health Care Act by a vote of 51-50 – 50 Republicans voted Aye, 48 Democrats voted No. Two Republicans voted No – Lisa Murkowski (Ark.) and Susan Collins (Maine). Vice President Mike Pence, serving as President of the Senate, cast the 51st vote. That was just step one. The House-passed version includes defunding Planned Parenthood and the end of taxpayer subsidies for abortion coverage in plan covered policies. Please pray, pray, pray! And thank you for praying!
