It is time for you to act, Lord; your law is being broken. (Psalm 119:126)

Dear Praying Friends,

Pastor Dan Carroll started a men’s Bible study in 1990 that has become a thriving megachurch with three California locations. Dan serves with Pastor Jack Hayford on the board of King’s Seminary, from which he holds a Doctorate of Divinity degree. Dan’s letter, written to California Christian leaders, is stirring the hearts of pastors and laymen everywhere:

My name is Dan Carroll and I am the Senior Pastor of Water of Life Community Church in Fontana, California. Water of Life is an outreach-oriented church with a focus on overseas and urban ministries. My wife Gale and I planted Water of Life 28 years ago with 27 people. Today we have a weekly attendance of 7,000 to 8,000.

Like many of you, I do not have a history of political involvement. My passion is ministry, not politics. But year after year, I have watched the state legislature pass bill after bill that negatively impacted our community and our youth. When AB 2943 was introduced, I knew I could no longer passively remain on the sidelines.

Water of Life seeks to bring hope, healing and transformation to individuals through the power of the Gospel, including those who struggle with same sex attraction and gender confusion. Through AB 2943, Legislators are seeking to declare all fee-based resources offered to these individuals as consumer fraud. This means our counseling centers can no longer minister to these individuals and employees in our bookstores could face liability for guiding a person to books or other resources that address same sex attraction from a Biblical perspective. This is a direct threat to the religious freedom of Christian counselors, ministries, and churches. And it is also a direct threat to the freedom of individuals facing unwanted attractions or identity confusion to find help from a licensed counselor or support group. I could not sit silently by and watch this bill pass.

So, when AB 2943 began to move through our legislature, I asked our church to contact their state legislators to ask them to oppose this bill. This was the first time in 28 years I had ever spoken publicly about politics. Surprisingly, soon after making my appeal, I received a call from our local Assemblywoman Eloise Reyes asking me to meet with her to discuss AB 2943. I later found out she called because she received 3,000 phone calls and emails from Water of Life people opposing this bill.

After an hour plus conversation in Assemblywoman Reyes’ office, I was invited by her to go to Sacramento to meet with Assemblyman Evan Low, the author of AB 2943, to discuss our strong concerns with the bill.

Frankly, I was shocked at both Assembly members' willingness to thoughtfully sit and discuss this bill. Low even agreed to delay the bill, until there were further discussions with the opposition. The whole experience has been way out of my comfort zone, but it has shown me that if we get involved, and walk this out thoughtfully and kindly, we can make an enormous difference in our state and help stop legislation that undermines our ability to share the Gospel.

Why am I writing you this letter? Legislators are returning to the Capitol from summer recess on August 6 to vote on this bill. Obviously, I believe I have made a mistake by not speaking up sooner. My church, like yours, has a voice in our community and your state representatives need to hear from you and your congregation. The time to sit by and hope someone else is going to speak up is over. I am writing this letter to encourage you to get involved, while we still have a voice in the State of California.

Sincerely,

Senior Pastor Dan Carroll

Prophetic Pastoral Leadership: The Key to America’s Future – I urge you to forward this letter to your pastor. Anyone can see that our once-blessed American culture has become coarsened and corrupted. Is it too late to turn the tide? America’s pastors are the key. Thankfully, pastors are experiencing the same kind of epiphany as Pastor Carroll had. If enough pastors across America fall before God in prayer and arise together as one, there is still time to turn America around. If they will stir their people to use the authority given them as the people of God TO PRAY, and as American citizens TO VOTE their biblical values in the primary and general elections, America may have a hope and a future. But our window of opportunity is very narrow.

  • Please pray that thousands of American pastors will experience the same awakening as Pastor Carroll. Like the prophets of old who spoke truth to power and the clergy of America’s founding era, may these pastors find their voices and declare their spiritual wisdom in the governmental sphere of our nation where America’s destiny is being decided. May they quickly fill the void that the absence of their voices has created in both our churches and the public square. May their leadership be blessed to reverse the spiritual apathy, biblical illiteracy, and cultural indifference in our pews that has led to extreme moral, spiritual, and political decay in our states and nation. Thank God for those who are stirring, those who are awake, and those who have long stood in the gap.
  • May pastors not yet connected to org connect, and may churches with Culture Impact Teams grow in number and powerfully impact our communities and nation while there is still time! (Dt 8:6-20; 2 Chr 20:24-20; Ps 33:12; Pr 11:14;Eze 3:3-10; 33:1-9; Jonah 1:2;3:2-5)

National Day of Prayer: Not Just One Day a Year – National Day of Prayer President Dr. Ronnie Floyd is determined to make the National Day of Prayer (NDP) a year-round event with year-round influence to help the praying Christian community genuinely impact our nation. FRC has long seen the National Day of Prayer as the anchor to the prayer movement. Other than Thanksgiving, it is the only Day of Prayer established by law and is akin to the historic prayer proclamations made by the Continental Congress periodically throughout the Revolutionary War and other times of national crisis. Yesterday was the last day of the 31 Days of Prayer for My Nation which began on Sunday, July 1, the day designated for Call2Fall. The effort, born out of the NDP’s 2018 national theme “UNITY,” was part of Dr. Floyd’s larger vision of creating a “rhythm of prayer” that stirs and facilitates prayer throughout the year. This continuous flow of payer will culminate in the National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of May each year.

As I and others have repeatedly written, “We need a National Day of Prayer every day,” or similarly, “a daily Call2Fall.” Is that not what Scripture teaches, what Jesus modelled, and the faith-filled believers both in Scripture and those who have made a difference in Christian history practiced in their generations? Dr. Floyd is giving us a little push to embrace the idea of more united prayer among the churches and parachurch ministries God has raised up to trumpet His call to prayer. See Dr. Floyd’s August 2018 Prayer Priorities.

  • Lord, help us to grow our devotion and sharpen our focus in prayer, especially in this critical time surrounding the primary and midterm elections. Like the children of Israel whom Esther and Mordecai called to prayer and fasting under the threat of annihilation as a people, Lord, mobilize your people in this hour to extraordinary, focused prayer and fasting to prevent the legal empowerment of those who promise to force all Americans to do evil. May your people stir themselves to elect righteous people who will support your values and may those with an evil agenda be subdued. In this challenging time, Lord, advance your purposes on earth even as it is in heaven. (2 Kg 13:15-19; 2 Chr 36:22; Ezra 1:1; Dan 6:10; Est 3:8-8:17; Mt 17:21; Eph 5:14-16; 6: 10-20; 1 Th 5:17; 1 Tim 2:1-8; Rev 19:15)

In the upcoming election, many candidates are advocating for the continued taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. Many are also in favor of transgender bathroom policies that force men and women as well as boys and girls to share restrooms, locker rooms, and showers with persons of the opposite sex. Some promise open border policies and sanctuary cities. Many want God out of government altogether and others advocate for a socialist America.

An insufficient turnout by values voters in the November election could lead to a reversal of all the recent pro-life and religious liberty gains. In addition, depending upon the timing of the Senate vote, the confirmation of the current Supreme Court nominee could be in jeopardy. Our foreign policy toward friendly nations, especially Israel, and toward our foes, like Iran, North Korea, Syria, China, Russia, etc. is in jeopardy. All of the current administration’s religious liberty initiatives at home and abroad are in jeopardy. Given the brash behavior and shocking hatred voiced and acted out by the “resistance movement,” anti-Christian religious oppression could resume, even explode in a dramatic fashion, far beyond anything we have seen in the past. Please take the need for prayer and action between now and November seriously!

Finally, please add these items to your prayer list: 1)Growing evidence of Facebook’s customer data abuse and censorship of conservative users may have led to the largest stock sell-off of any company in U.S. history. Twitter is similarly under fire and Google is accused of prioritizing liberal individuals, groups, and media in their web search returns and making conservative groups and individuals hard to find. 2) Dismissing U.S. threats of added sanctions, Turkey has denied Pastor Andrew Brunson’s appeal for release from house arrest. 3)A petition urging the U.S. Supreme Court to save the WWI Peace Cross has been submitted by 109 Members of Congress. The 40-foot high memorial was erected in Bladensburg, Md. shortly after World War I to remember townsmen who died in the war. Long the target of atheist groups, this is a last-ditch effort to reverse an atheist group’s successful lawsuit. 4) Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited Tony’s radio program to highlight the Department of Justice's new Religious Liberty Task Force, established to ensure enforcement of President Trump’s religious liberty executive orders. 5) It is time for serious prayer warriors to consider attending the 2018 Values Voter Summit. If you are an experienced intercessor, you may w ish to apply to be part of the VVS onsite Prayer Team. For more information, write me at prayer@frc.org.
