Prayer Targets: Perhaps the Most Deceptive, Anti-Religious Bill in American History!

May 15, 2019

Beloved... it was needful for me to write... and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in... ungodly men [who are] turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:3-4)

Dear Praying Friends,

Monday night, twenty-one prominent Christian leaders delivered a letter to Republican and Democratic leadership in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, opposing the poorly-named Equality Act (H.R. 5) scheduled for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday, May 17 [could be earlier]. The pastors and other evangelical leaders who initially signed the letter include: Tony Perkins, Michele Bachmann, Paul Blair, Stephen Broden, Carter Conlon, James Dobson, Jim Garlow, Franklin Graham, Jack Graham, Jack Hibbs, Harry Jackson, Jr., Robert Jeffress, Guillermo Maldonado, Eric Metaxas, Robert Morris, Ramiro Peña, Everett Piper, Ralph Reed, James Robison, Todd Wagner, and Tim Wildmon.

The letter stated in part:

“As those tasked with the leadership of the church, and as those seeking to humbly convey Biblical truth for the benefit of every man, woman, and child in society, we the undersigned cannot remain silent concerning a dangerous bill pending in Congress known as the Equality Act (H.R. 5). Not only is it incompatible with God’s Word (the Bible) and the historic teaching of the church, but the Equality Act is also riddled with threats to religious liberty and the sanctity of human life.

“Passage of this coercive measure would lay the groundwork for this lie to enter classrooms across the nation, as public educators could be compelled to teach it to their students. No family would be safe from the long reach of the Equality Act,” it continued.

“As Evangelical and Christian leaders humbly attempting to be faithful to God’s Word and historic biblical doctrine, we must clearly state our opposition to the Equality Act and any similar measures. Simply put, this bill will harm men, women, and children, and stifle freedom. It must be stopped,” concluded the letter. (From a May 14, 2019 FRC Press Release)

If you are a regular user of the FRC Prayer Team Targets, you know that we have been calling for prayer over this pointedly anti-Christian legislation since Nancy Pelosi first announced that it would be a priority for the House of Representatives if the Democrats won control of the House in 2018. As is usually the case, even most Christians and others who honor God, value family and the U.S. Constitution, and hold to historic and traditional American values are still unfamiliar with the Equality Act and have not delved into all its implications and consequences. It behooves us to make this an emergency matter, and to generate, as best we can, as much extraordinary prayer among our fellow believers, friends, and family. We should also use social media, email, and other platforms to generate calls to our members of the House of Representatives and Senators.

More on the Equality Act of 2019 that Every Christian and American Should Know – The Equality Act lays the legal framework for a massive assault on religious liberty. The media, big business (the Chamber of Commerce), Hollywood, and even some scientific and medical associations have endorsed the ideology of the LGBTQ movement despite the scientific, medical, psychological, moral, biblical, and spiritual evidence of its terribly high cost to individuals, families, and society.

God created every person male and female – giving them DNA at conception that identifies their immutable gender in every cell of their body. The “Equality Act” would bring the confusion of LGBTQ sexual ideology into our schools nationwide, imposing this anti-Christian ideology upon children and setting them against their parents – and in many cases, against conscience, faith, and religion. This is not hyperbole. Already where the principles of the “Equality Act” have been embraced by states or local jurisdictions – in schools and other authorities, including courts – have openly usurped the authority of parents to direct their children’s education in these matters. Some have gone even farther, secretly allowing children to practice their unnatural sexual identity at school (fueled by the school’s indoctrination) behind their parents’ backs. I have previously relayed the true story of one woman whose underage daughter ran away to Oregon where the law allowed for physicians to mutilate her body, give her a hysterectomy, and inject her with male hormones. These practices will be pushed in every state and the court and will multiply exponentially if the “Equality Act” were to become federal law.

Moreover, fathers and mothers, who hold to biblical faith and values, will find themselves in direct conflict with the law and be forced to remove their children from public schools where these doctrines and practices are being taught. Those who cannot will find themselves clashing with authorities, brought before councils, boards, and courts, and punished with lawsuits and even criminal charges. Just look at what has already happened to bakers, florists, photographers, and wedding venue operators in jurisdictions where something like a local Equality Act has become law.

There is no biblical room for Christians to compromise or claim ignorance or indifference in this battle for the soul and survival of the family, religious liberty, and ultimately America. Those who are in the middle who do not hold biblical convictions cannot understand how serious this is.

This will also eagerly be interpreted as giving wholesale legal authority to abortion – claiming that a woman’s “equal rights” give her a legal right to abortion – regardless of what her state laws say or whether the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Clearly, the House of Representatives has the votes to pass this law. If Majority Leader Mitch McConnell allows the bill to come to a vote in the Senate (which he could choose not to do), many policy experts worry that a few “squishy” Republicans, e.g., those who voted in 2013 for a precursor to this bill, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), could vote for this bill and cause its passage. Then President Trump, who has not personally pledged a veto, would be faced with that decision. • May God intervene and speak to the consciences of Democrats and Republicans. May Christians across America speak out and make their voices heard during the final hours prior to the House vote. May the 80 percent of men and women across America, who profess faith in God, hear His instruction and understand that this bill is about restricting religious freedom and freedom of conscience and not what it has been made out to be. May America remain free and not subject to these consequences or our disregard for God and His eternal laws – both in and outside the church. May we repent, and may God give our elected leaders wisdom and courage to do what they ought to do, especially Mitch McConnell and President Trump. Let God arise, and His enemies be scattered. Lord, have mercy upon us and make this a turning point – a stake in the ground – not toward greater sin and reprobation, but toward repentance, righteousness, and a sound mind for a nation whose peoples have strayed from you in so many ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen. (Dt 6:4-9; 11:18-19;Lev 18:28; Mt 18:6; Lk 17:1-2; 1 Tim 1:5-11; Jude 1:1-25)

Watchmen on the Wall – Every year it seems that during the last week of May, when FRC holds our flagship National Pastors Briefing, some epochal national decision is about to be made or is being debated that will bring radical change to America – one way or another. So many things we face today are hugely consequential – Iran, China, Russia, worldwide Christian persecution, and harassment and persecution of believers in our own nation. But of greatest consequence is the condition and focus of our local churches across America. Are we vital and alive? Are our pastors shepherding their flocks and leading their communities to win more and more to Christ and to teach and mobilize their people to be vital salt and light in their communities? Are their churches becoming, more and more, “houses of prayer” for all people as Jesus said they would be? Visit the Watchmen Pastors Briefing page. America’s hope is a repentant and vibrant church whose members are praying as per 1 Timothy 2:1-4, being salt and light in their communities and actively spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Please Pray for our Watchmen Pastors Event, May 22-24, that God will be mightily present and that the powerful team assembled to minister to the pastors will minister in His power such that pastors, churches, cities, states, and the nation will be revived and awakened! If you would be interested in being a part of the on-site prayer team, send me a note at prayer@frc.org with the subject line “Prayer team.” Tell me a little about your prayer experience and I will get back with you.

I had so much more to bring to you but felt that stopping passage of the Equality Act was of preeminent importance. As always, thank you for praying!
