A recent study out of Harvard University indicates that children who are raised by intact families have greater social mobility than their single-parented peers. Moreover, negative outcomes are not restricted to the children of these single-parent households. As Brad Wilcox writes in his Slate article, the rates of single-parenthood at the community level have been shown to impede the mobility of everyone, not just the families in distress. If we are to break the cycle of single-parents and improve economic situations for all, it is crucial that married couples do what they can to foster a culture of marriage in their communities.
