Their proponents claim they will bring America up to competitive par with better-performing educational systems like those in Finland and Singapore and make our children career and college ready. Education advocates and parents are told the Standards are good for the nation's children, promote parity in education, and ensure success in college, career, and life. But are the Common Core State Standards indeed good for America's students?

    May 01, 2014: With all the Sturm und Drang surrounding the widespread and ongoing implementation of the Common Core State Standards initiative (CCSS), it may be surprising to learn that a new Gallup poll indicates over a third of parents haven't even heard of Common Core. Despite the press surrounding Indiana's withdrawal from the standards on substantive and budgetary grounds and the latest high-profile news that CCSS supporting organization the National Educators Association has criticized Common Core's roll-out, the recent poll supports the notion that the standards were created without sufficient input from parents and educators, and took the public by surprise. According to Gallup, "fewer than four in 10 parents (38 percent) appear to be knowledgeable about the standards, saying they have heard either a great deal or a fair amount about them. Nearly as many - 31 percent - have heard nothing, while another 30 percent have heard only a little."

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were created without benefit of transparency, by a non-profit organization, with the involvement of very few educators, and majority funded and influenced by corporate interests. 3. The CCSS "dumb down" the teaching of America's students by emphasizing "perspectives" and "critical thinking" over content and facts.

  • Common Core State Standards: Mathematics

    April 17, 2014: Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in math were developed to address the criticism that national math curriculums were "a mile wide and an inch deep." The drafters sought to develop more focus and coherence through the standards, with the belief that those students who can explain mathematical rules would have a better chance at succeeding in less familiar mathematical tasks. The CCSS cover fewer topics than those covered by traditional math materials, and eliminate topics such as pre-calculus and most aspects of trigonometry. CCSS also eliminate concepts traditionally associated with algebra II and geometry, such as complex numbers, vectors, polynomials, logarithms, logarithmic and exponential functions, the Binomial Theorem, composite and inverse functions, matrices, ellipses, hyperbolae, the derivation of area of general triangles, and the concept of "pi."

    April 15, 2014: Under the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), traditional English curricula are changed. The Standards state that as "college and career readiness overwhelming focuses on complex texts outside of literature, these standards [also] ensure students are being prepared to read, write, and research across the curriculum, including in history and science."
