Prayer Targets: Abortion Unhinged; The End of Roe in View; Unplanned the Movie

January 30, 2019

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

Dear Praying Friends,

FRC President Tony Perkins (see bio) is a former United States Marine, uniformed police officer, anti-terrorism trainer, two-term member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, and now national and international advocate for religious liberty. He recently had the honor of accompanying Pastor Andrew Brunson out of Turkey and back to the U.S. He is also a pro-life champion. These excerpts are from his 2010 article, Fighting Abortion - The Measure of a Just Society:

"Having grown up in a Christian home and having accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior at the age of nine, I just assumed that I was pro-life, even though I can't recall ever hearing a sermon on the topic. After all, I thought, aren't all good Christians prolife? In the summer of 1992, I came face to face with the realization that being pro-life was more than a slogan on a bumper sticker -- it was an understanding that what some have relegated to a mere political issue is in fact at the very nexus of a God-honoring, just society. That July, Operation Rescue -- a nonviolent pro-life movement that was all over the news at the time -- came to my hometown of Baton Rouge to conduct a "rescue" at one of the city's two abortion clinics. This amounted to basically just sitting and praying -- and sometimes singing hymns -- in front of the clinic. The purpose was to get pregnant women to pause and rethink their abortion decision. As a veteran officer working with the Baton Rouge Police Department Reserves, I had a front-row seat to the event. And what I experienced would rock my world... At roll call one evening, word came of the pending demonstration. I was taken aback by the negative and almost hostile reaction from some of my fellow officers. As the protest drew closer, the city spared no expense in mobilizing a tactical response that rivaled a small military operation. A public street was blocked off and an 8-foot chain-link fence was erected down the center of the road to keep the praying protestors from accessing the area around the clinic. In my nearly ten years of law enforcement and international antiterrorist work, I had never witnessed such a response to a planned peaceful protest.

Why did the prospect of peaceful protestors elicit such an aggressive and militant response? I wanted to find out, so I purposefully chose not to work during the demonstration. Instead, I went to the clinic each morning that week as an observer to gain greater insight and clarity into this protest and the controversy surrounding it. Every morning I would arrive at the abortion clinic (along with my personal video camera), and in the evenings my wife and I would attend church services with those who were praying for and publicly standing for an end to abortion. Should God's Word or man's feckless opinion rule in our lives and laws? Clearly, evil will rule if God's people remain silent. The experience was a pivotal moment in my life. The overly aggressive and -- in a handful of cases -- violent behavior of some officers against the peaceful protestors (all of which I was capturing on video) underscored for me that this was no mere "political" issue. It went to the core of who we are as a people. Persuaded that others needed to witness the real situation, I gave my video footage to a local TV station, which then aired the shocking clips each night. I also wrote about what I saw in a local publication. This venture into eyewitness reporting didn't sit well with department officials, and as a result, I was suspended from the force. What I witnessed that week was one of those rare occasions when we are given the opportunity to see beyond the skirmishes to the real battle that is raging for the hearts and minds of people. Should God's Word or man's feckless opinion rule in our lives and laws? Clearly, evil will rule if God's people remain silent...

A Call to Action: While it isn't possible to go into all the Scripture references to life, womb, pregnancies, babies, murder, etc., in this short article, God's Word says much about the inherent dignity of each human person from conception. God's Word, the witness of science, and clear reason go hand in hand. Simply put, empirical scientific evidence confirms the reality described in Scripture. As Christians we must refuse to allow the sanctity of human life to be relegated to and decided by the ever-changing winds of "politics." As I saw in Louisiana years ago, it is an issue of central spiritual importance to every individual believer and to the church. The grandeur of our awesome Creator is reflected in the way He has made each of us, regardless of how we are conceived or the environment into which we are born. God chose to create every single individual in His likeness and endows each of us with "glory and honor" (Psalm 8:5). A being so special and precious should, from the time of conception on, be welcomed into the world and protected by our laws. During that hot summer week, I finally came to understand that our right to life, ordained by the God of the universe, is at the core of a just society. It demands the unflagging leadership of the church, as we strive to uphold life as the Life-giver meant us to, whether in our personal lives or in our homes, churches, cities, and nation. (Tony Perkins, Fighting Abortion - The Measure of a Just Society, published in Answers in Genesis, September 14, 2010).

The End of Roe v. Wade is in Sight -- In 1973, seven of nine members of the U.S. Supreme Court discovered a woman's "right to abortion" in the "penumbras" (shadows) of the U.S. Constitution, including the "right to privacy." The "unalienable right to life," enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Fifth Amendment, meant nothing. Common sense and God's moral law were wholly ignored. No tyrant in history has been responsible for the slaughter of 60 million human beings. Yet this wrongly decided legal decision has led to that very outcome over the past 46 years -- and that in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Just one more High Court vote could change this.

Modern science and technology have proven conclusively that a child in the womb is both human and alive from the moment of conception. Scripture teaches, "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!" (Ps 139:13-17). Roe was an assault on God himself, who made man in his own image. (see Heartbeat Bill & Roe v. Wade; NY & Roe Same Lie; More States Following Suit)

  • May the American people experience the conviction of the Holy Spirit and wholeheartedly repent for tolerating the ruling and results of Roe v. Wade. May God's people cry out to him in this hour of opportunity. May God engineer his choice of the right case, and may the High Court vote to reverse the bloody consequences of Roe v. Wade. May God intervene to defeat new initiatives to further enshrine abortion in our state and federal laws and constitutions. May abortion come to an end in the wake of nationwide repentance and a Jesus awakening! (Gen 1:27;9:6; Dt 19:13; 2 Kg 24:3-4; Ps 127:3; Jn 16:8)

Abortion Advocates in Unhinged Frenzy -- As Tony Perkins wrote in 2010, "As Christians we must refuse to allow the sanctity of human life to be relegated to and decided by the ever-changing winds of 'politics.'" Indeed, abortion is not just a political issue, it is an immoral assault on human life. It is a spiritual war against God and humanity that defies all common sense. It will be defeated by men, women, boys, and girls of faith, crying out to God in extraordinary prayer, declaring truth winsomely, volunteering at pregnancy resource centers, voicing their concerns with their elected representatives, voting in elections, and being generous with their finances. The spirit behind the pro-abortion fanaticism that defamed and viciously tortured Brett Kavanaugh in an effort to derail his Supreme Court confirmation can be defeated. The unhinged behavior of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the pro-abortion legislators whose ghastly cheers rang in Albany upon passage of the most radical abortion law in the history of America must be rebuked, and the lighting of the One World Trade Center in bright pink to celebrate their victory must be shamed. Paul said: "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). Indeed, other states are moving rapidly in the opposite direction -- in the direction of valuing and protecting preborn life. And a growing majority of Americans, including young people, are declaring themselves to be pro-life. • Lord, open the eyes of the multitude of Americans who have been deeply deceived by what is nothing less than a doctrine of demons. Remove the veil from their eyes, and grant them the gift of repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Num 22:31; Is 42:6-8; Eph 2:13; 1 Tim 4:1; 1 Jn 1:9-10)

Unplanned, the Movie -- A new dramatic exposé of Planned Parenthood, due in theaters this March, is destined to reverberate for decades and stir Americans to demand an end to the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood once for all. God willing, it will also stir a new wave of prevailing prayer to end elective abortion and gratuitous abortion laws altogether. The movie Unplanned tells the story of Abby Johnson, the youngest person ever to serve as director of a Planned Parenthood clinic. When she saw a live abortion via ultrasound, Abby was sickened and was thrust into a dark night of the soul that resulted in her summarily resigning from Planned Parenthood. Ultimately, through repentance and faith, she experienced a radical conversion to the pro-life cause. An important sub-theme of the film was the role that prayer played. In addition to her family's distress and prayers over her abortion clinic career, the perpetual prayers of the pro-life prayer group 40 Days for Life, led by co-founder David Bereit, whose members kept a silent vigil and sidewalk counseling ministry outside the Planned Parenthood facility Johnson managed, made a profound difference. I saw a pre-screening of the film last week and was blown away by its impact. If the film gets the distribution it deserves, it will help change more minds and hearts. • Thank you, Lord, that you are using not only some of America's politicians and some of America's churches to stand up for life, but increasingly leaders in other influencing spheres of culture. Please continue to breathe upon leaders in every sphere to echo and persuade others to embrace your call to life! (Neh 3: all; Rom 12:3-8; 1 Cor 12:7-31; 1 Tim 2:1-2, 8)

There is much more to pray over, but let's focus on New York's outrageous new law, that it will stir Christians everywhere to pray and act to turn the tide toward life in their own state during this window of opportunity. As always, thank you for praying!
