Prayer Targets: Godfearing Government; New Congress; SOGI Bills; Going the Way of the Boy Scouts

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. (Jn 9:4)
Dear Praying Friends,
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth touches millions through her daily radio programs, Revive Our Hearts and Seeking Him. Her 19 books have sold over three million copies. In 1986, as Executive Editor, she produced The Rebirth of America, a penetrating analysis of America's spiritual condition and our hope for revival. Here is an excerpt from just one of its outstanding articles, "The U.S. Government: Master or Servant?":
Once upon a time the people controlled the Government. Perhaps the Government is changing that.
The legitimate purpose of government since the founding of America has been to protect the lives, liberty, and property of its citizens.
Our founding fathers based our system of government on the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." They understood that man was created to serve God, not the state. Since man was created in God's image, government, they reasoned, should be an aid to help secure man's God-endowed rights. They instituted a system of representative government with clear limits upon what government could and could not do. This was carefully and meticulously carried out to ensure individual freedom.
Since the founding of our nation the goal of institutionalized government has been to be a servant of mankind, never the master of man. The framers of our American federal system, in establishing the Constitution advocated that people govern themselves under God's laws. Government should never have the 'power to deprive individuals of rights...that were "endowed by their Creator." The Declaration of Independence states that governments derive "their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed," and that "whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it..."
Today we find that government is threatening our basic freedoms. Currently, more than 40 percent of a citizen's income is disposed of on his behalf by the government at the federal, state, and local levels. As late as 1928 federal governmental spending amounted to only 3 percent of the national income.
In his book The Sum of Good Government; US. Representative Phillip Crane quotes Dr. Roger Freeman: "By its "massive entry over the past two decades into the field of domestic public services, the national government has decisively altered the nature of the federal structure with an intricate system of checks and balances, the Founding Fathers had aimed to disperse authority so widely that no one man -- could prevail over the others. They concluded from history that that concentration of power corrupts sooner or later leads to tyranny. Whenever the wisdom of the age-old lesson is disregarded, its truth is brought home to the nation sooner or later with a brutal shock... American society has strayed far from its beginnings. Instead of looking to government primarily as a source of protection from foreign or domestic enemies and not as a provider of services and benefits, Americans have embraced the very centralized government the Founding Fathers urged them to fear and hold in check."
We have allowed government to became all-powerful today as we have foolishly exchanged freedom for security. Economist Milton Friedman points out, "The economic controls that have proliferated in the United States in recent decades have not only restricted the use of our economic resources, they have also affected our freedom of speech, of press and religion."
We must awake to the fact that we have been educated to dependence rather than to liberty, that we have been brainwashed by television and books to believe that it is the responsibility of government to take resources from some and bestow them upon others. Why have we done this? U.S. Senator Jesse Helms provides the answer, "When you have men who no longer believe that God is in charge of human affairs, you have men attempting to take the place of God by means of the Superstate. The Divine Providence on which our forefathers relied has been supplanted by the Providence of the All-Powerful State. I believe that this is the source of deep weakness in America, because it is a transgression of the first and greatest of the Ten Commandments." (Rebirth of America, 1986, Arthur S. DeMoss Foundation)
Entering 2019, we face epochal challenges as a nation. Like the Apostle Paul on his missionary journey, we are "troubled on every side... fightings without, fears within" (2 Cor 7:5). By far, our chief challenge is the apostasy against Christ and biblical faith -- the foundation upon which our free nation was established and the only foundation upon which it can be sustained. The war against religious liberty at home and abroad is at its core an effort by humanistic, atheistic forces to destroy those foundations. Only God and his people have the answer: repentance, prayer, biblical literacy, clear biblical thinking and vision, God-anointed leadership, faith, reliance upon the God of the Bible, and wholehearted obedience boldly to be salt and light in society (evangelism and cultural transformation). These are all essential if our nation is to avoid anarchy and godless tyranny. God is eager and willing to save.
The 116th Congress -- the new House and Senate -- will each be seated tomorrow, January 3, 2019 at noon. You can watch the House opening on C-SPAN and read a written guide to the House Floor Proceedings. You can also watch the Senate opening on C-SPAN and a read a written guide to the Senate Floor Proceedings.
Having won a majority in the House of Representatives, the Democrats will control the House, and the Republicans the Senate. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is expected to be elected Speaker of the House. She will be immediately sworn in, then the Members-Elect will take the oath of office. The party leaders will be announced, determined privately following the November election. The House officers will be elected, the Senate and President will be notified, then House Rules and Procedures will be adopted. The Democrats have announced major changes to the House Rules. With a Democratic majority in the House and a filibuster override required in contentious Senate votes, it will be extremely difficult for President Trump to push through legislation he desires unless he makes significant compromises to accommodate the Democrats in both Houses. President Trump does have the power of the veto to stop bills he cannot accept.
The Chairmen chosen by the Democrat in November to head the various committees have all promised to launch in depth investigations into President Trump's affairs to bring charges to impeach him. While they have decided temporarily to tone down that threat, there is no reason to believe that they will not carry it out.
- Please pray that God will place his hand upon the 116th Congress -- that he will restrain it from excess and guide it to offer constructive bi-partisan legislation that is in line with his word, which is his will. May he prevent passage of laws that condone, foster, promote, or fund what the Bible clearly teaches as sin. May the fear of God come upon every member of Congress to make him or her aware of the consequences of declaring what is good to be evil and evil good. As each member of the House and Senate take their oath of office seriously tomorrow, may they be held to account by the Holy Spirit and determination of the God-honoring citizens they serve. May God have mercy upon our nation over the next two years and may his superintendence of Congress and all the branches enable his kingdom purposes and the moral and spiritual welfare of the American people move forward during the coming year. May the hostility we can expect based upon what we have seen for the past two years be amazingly subdued. May the expected efforts to further punish believers for their biblical beliefs be unsuccessful, and may God be glorified in all things no matter what the future brings! (2 Kg 19:19; Is 5:20; 11:1-10; Jer 6:16a; Mic 6:8; Rom 12:18; Eph 5:1-17; 1 Ptr 4:11; Jude 7)
Finally, please add these things to your prayer list: 1) The Fairness for All Act, now under consideration by Congress is nothing less than a precursor for much more of the same at the federal level. This is yet another Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity (SOGI) bill to empower LGBT activists against Bible-believing Christians, but with federal power behind it. The Alliance Defending Freedom calls it the "Unfairness for All Act"; 2) Nancy Pelosi promises to make the Equality Act among her top priorities in 2019. This is the comprehensive law which redefines the word "sex," as used in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and later laws and regulations intended to deal with sex discrimination offenses against men or women, to now mean LGBT persons. Again, it would be used against Christians to punish them for their biblical beliefs about human sexuality and marriage; 3) Chai Feldblum, an LGBT activist that President Obama appointed to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2010, was reappointed by President Trump to this influential commission. Feldblum is a major advocate of the "Equality Act," but there is resistance to her confirmation in the Senate; 4) There is so much more, but these are going to be huge issues this year impacting Christians and ultimately churches. The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) and the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) have already endorsed this misguided effort. But they will both face the same problems as the Boy Scouts did when they compromised their biblical principles to get along.
May yours be a great new year. Thank you for praying it through with us!
