Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. (Proverbs 14:34)

Dear Praying Friends,

In 1941, Sarah Foulkes Moore (1890-1973) and her husband Willard co-founded Herald of His Coming. The Moores were ardent intercessors. Their powerful newspaper, filled with revivalist sermons, exhortations, and prayers, has been published in nearly 30 languages with distribution depots in 30 nations. It is still sent freely to all who ask (see its history). These excerpts are from Mrs. Moore's "A Revival Of Righteousness":

"It was in 1904. All Wales was aflame. The nation had drifted far from God. The spiritual conditions were low indeed. Church attendance was poor, and sin abounded on every side... Suddenly, like an unexpected tornado, the Spirit of God swept over the land. The churches were crowded. Multitudes were unable to get in. The meetings ran day and night. Evan Roberts was the human instrument God was using. Singing, testimony and prayer were the chief features. Nothing had ever come over Wales with such far-reaching results. Infidels were converted, drunkards, thieves and gamblers saved, and thousands reclaimed to respectability. Confessions of awful sins were heard on every side. Old debts were paid. The theater had to close for want of patronage. In five weeks 20,000 conversions were recorded" (Oswald J. Smith).

The Fire of God Breaking out - Years before, God had breathed in the heart of a lad in the coal mines of Loughor, a prayer for a spiritual awakening. For thirteen unwearying, unflagging years Evan Roberts prayed and pleaded for the Spirit's outpouring, alone and with others, until his petitions became a consuming flame. Then the fire of God broke out at Loughor and spread like a blazing prairie fire around the world. The revival began among Christians confessing to their lack of assurance of salvation, powerlessness, etc. In one week seventy Christians fully surrendered their lives to Christ.

Then the fire of the Holy Spirit fell upon the meetings. The congregations grew until places of worship could not accommodate them. The revival Evan Roberts and others had prayed for years, had come!

Newspapers reporting the awakening wrote, "The whole district is in the grip of an extraordinary spiritual awakening which shows no signs of relaxing."

Day and night the meetings went on. From the lips of the humblest and lowliest poured passionate prayers that quickened the whole being. Men and women rose more than one at a time and prayed with inspired fervor. The Spirit of the Lord was felt everywhere... Visitors came from near and far and crowds attended the prayer meetings... Drunkards were lifted from the depths of degradation, their hearts aflame with the Savior's love...

Constrained by the Holy Spirit, people thronged to hear the Spirit-filled young miner. Churches were filled all hours of the day. "Ye are My witnesses," was the burden of the message... Prayer, testimony and singing would sweep over the congregation in torrents and hundreds of souls would surrender to God, the congregations bursting into joyous thanksgiving and hymns of gladness. The Holy Spirit bore witness by "signs and wonders"... Indescribable scenes took place.

Evan Roberts would give four definitive steps necessary to salvation: 1) The past must be made clear by sin being confessed to God, and everything wrong to man put right. 2) Every doubtful thing in the life must be put away. 3) There must be prompt and implicit obedience to the Holy Spirit. 4) There must be public confession of Christ.

"Bend the Church, Save the World!" was Evan Roberts' burden for the Church. The Welsh word for "bend" conveys the meaning of submission to God and removing all resistance to His will. Roberts' one aim was to get Christians right with God so that the Spirit might come with converting power upon the unsaved.

The world bore testimony to the practical, ethical and spiritual fruit of the revival. Students returned their unfairly won medals. The post office's supply of money order blanks was exhausted as people payed their debts and made restitution. Harlots and gamblers were won to Christ. Magistrates had no court cases to decide. Saloons and theaters closed. Oaths were not heard. Shops were sold out of Bibles and Testaments. Bible reading became the order of the day. Prayer meetings were held in the mines underground, in trains and all kinds of places.

Far and wide the influence spread. Heads of industry reported that since the revival began, their men were more productive than they had been for years. Members of Parliament postponed their political meetings to attend revival services. Theatrical companies found no audiences. It seemed to some that "All the world was praying!" Football teams disbanded because their members had converted to Christ, and He became their only attraction. Young and old put away "drink" and temperance workers saw the Spirit of God accomplish more in three months than they had accomplished in forty years.

A tidal wave of revival rolled over the cities of Wales. Two months after the revival broke, 70,000 names of converts were recorded. Visitors flocked from all parts of the world to see God breaking forth on the sons of men.

Today's Deepest Need Is a Revival of Righteousness! The awful problems of crime, immorality, political corruption, mammon-madness, pleasure-worship, etc., are eating like destructive termites at the foundations of our nation. Today America is facing the supreme crisis of her history! We are seeing the breakdown of modern civilization. Only one thing can save America, and that is to get back to her spiritual foundations and return to the faith of her forefathers. Only a visitation from on high will turn the tide and save the day.

The responsibility of securing this spiritual revival rests entirely with praying men and women. Prayer groups and companies, whole churches and assemblies should organize to intercede for a national revival. Where there is no prayer there is no revival. What America - and every nation - need today more than anything else is for men and women to become desperately determined and earnest to see God work in revival power, and to take hold of God in an agony of importunate prayer (Is 64:1-7; Is 66:8). Let the people of God everywhere recognize the tremendous power of prayer and mobilize and organize their forces at this strategical point, so that our generation will be swept out of the present crisis and into a great revival! (Sarah Foulkes Moore, "A Revival of Righteousness," April 2003 issue, Herald of His Coming. Earlier versions gratefully acknowledge Welsh Revival contemporary Jessie-Penn Lewis as a major source. Mrs. Moore died in 1973. How might she assay America today?)

Pompeo Announces Historic "Commission on Unalienable Rights" -- Our laws and regulations shape our culture and govern and give direction to the nation. They impact us for good or evil and impact the nations of the world. Consider the immoral practice of the U.S. forcing nations to accept pro-abortion policies or pro-LGBT policies as a condition of receiving foreign aid or, instead, the moral practice of promoting pro-life policies by outlawing the use of U.S. funds to subsidize abortion or ordering American Ambassadors abroad to refrain from flying the rainbow flag over our embassies, and so avoiding an affront and offence toward the people of the nations. Moreover abortion "rights" and LGBT "rights" and other new rights yet unimagined are being declared "rights" or "human rights" every day, and advocates are demanding recognition of those rights to be honored even above the rights enumerated in our founding documents, even the rights of "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" that our Founders asserted to be unalienable and God-given. The things we have already declared as rights today would confound the Founders. Take time to read Pompeo's brief announcement and/or view the video and pray for this new commission. This commission will make history if the members truly elucidate the founding principles forgotten by too many Americans! (Read FRC's take; including audio by Tony Perkins)

  • God, please guide these men and women to rightly interpret the words of truth in our founding documents and what the intentions of the Founding Fathers were. May their work produce nation-changing and world-changing results! (Pr 22:282 Tim 2:15)

Adulterers: The New Protected Sexual Minority -- Just as the American Library Association is using its power to help Drag Queens promote the LGBT lifestyle to young children across America (see Drag Queen Story Times), now the American Psychological Association (APA), through its new "Consensual Non-Monogamy Task Force," is using its authority and any good will it has accumulated to promote the rights of people who engage in "diverse expressions of intimate relationships" like "open relationships, swinging and 'relationship anarchy.'" This association for psychologists surely know the physical, mental, and family health pathologies all such behaviors bring and the damage they always bring to the children of those who practice them. Sadly, they have exposed themselves as anything but professional and scientific. Seemingly they know nothing of spiritual things. From a biblical perspective, they are like false prophets. Read Cathy Ruse's shocking article, "Adulterers: The New Protected Sexual Minority."

  • Father, you warned us plainly of the consequences we would face if we departed from you and your moral laws. You established the beautiful created order for human sexuality within the bonds of mutual love between one man and one woman and the miracle of children that are born, nurtured, and raised in that atmosphere of holy love. God, forgive us! Revive our churches and awaken our nation! As Mrs. Moore wrote decades ago, "We are seeing the breakdown of modern civilization... Only a visitation from on high will turn the tide and save the day." Grant us, Lord, the will for extraordinary prayer and the strength to labor for true turnaround. In Jesus' Name! (Ex 20:14; Pr 5:1-23; Pr 6:32; Jude: all)

Finally, please add these matters to your prayer list. 1) Quebec, Canada has passed a bill that spells doom for religious liberty. Pray for our neighbors! 2) A British court has ordered a woman with a learning disorder to have an abortion. An English Bishop is appealing for her life. 3) Starting this fall, New York City public school students will be able to choose their classes, their sports, and their genders -- also their locker rooms, bathrooms, etc. 4) In what is likely one of many censorship forays into conservative thinking books and materials, Amazon has banned a book intended to help individuals with unwanted same-sex attraction (hear Peter Sprigg on Amazon censorship). 5) The California Assembly has passed a resolution calling upon pastors and other civic leaders to affirm homosexuality and transgenderism, and to condemn "conversion therapy."

Does the church understand how very important prayer is? Thank you for praying!
