Pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Dear Praying Friends,
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth has touched millions through her Revive Our Hearts and Seeking Him radio programs, as well as the True Woman movement. Her 19 books have sold more than three million copies. In 1986, she was executive editor of The Rebirth of America, published by the Arthur S. DeMoss Foundation, created by her father. From the section, "How to Pray for America," she deals extensively with personal sin, then with corporate:
America's future depends on the prayer of its people -- we need to know how to kneel before the Lord -- First confess to God the sins that our nation has committed. When Nehemiah learned of the troublesome situation Jerusalem was in, he prayed confessing "The sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments nor the statutes, or the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses" (Nehemiah 1:6, 7).
When you pray for our nation, first ask God to forgive our national sins. Repent for the sexual perversion we have tolerated as legitimate, alternate lifestyles. Repent that the foundation of our families has been destroyed, that we no longer hold the marriage vows sacred as God does. Repent of our sin of the legalized murder of over 15 million unborn babies, created in the image of God [near or surpassing 60 million in 2018]. Repent for allowing our children to be indoctrinated with secular humanism in the public schools. Confess to God every stand that our nation has taken contrary to His standards of right living.
Then plead with God to have mercy on our nation, to bring about a national movement of prayer, repentance, and obedience to his laws. John Wesley understood the power of prayer, to obtain God's mercy. He wrote, "Have you on the days of fasting and prayer? Storm the throne of grace and persevere therein, and mercy will come down."
Remember Your Leaders: Pray for Authorities -- Second, Scripture commands us to pray specifically for those who have authority in our nation. Paul exhorted Timothy to pray and intercede "for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty" (1Tim 2:2). He explained that if people will pray for their rulers, they will then have the freedom not only to live quiet and peaceable lives, but also to proclaim the gospel and introduce men and women to Christ.
Most Christians in America have neglected to exercise their right as God's children to influence by prayer the men God has allowed to bear authority. Because we have not labored in prayer to place godly men in our government and to change the hearts of godless men who occupy office, God has allowed us to be ruled by men motivated by selfishness, humanistic thinking, and peer pressure.
There is another group of people who need our prayers. In this hour of crisis, we must intercede for the men God has raised up to lead his people in the fight against the forces of Satan in this nation. These Christian leaders are vulnerable to constant attack because of the stand they are taking for God. We need to pray that God will put a hedge of protection around them, that they will be able to discern what God wants to say and that they will have the courage to speak God's message without ever faltering or retreating.
Pray for those who are enslaved to sin -- Finally, we need to pray for the millions of people in our nation who are trapped by sin. It's easy for us to criticize the sins that are destroying our very foundation; but we must love and pray for those who are slaves to alcohol, drugs, sex, money, and self. So many people are experiencing the empty, painful consequences of their rebellion against God. Moses stood in the gap between God and the blasphemous, idolatrous, Israelites who had erected the golden calf as a monument to their independence from God. Moses interceded for the Israelites and caused God to change his mind about destroying them. Let us join this man of prayer and prevail upon God to deliver those who are shackled by the chains of sin.
Friends, America stands on the brink of disaster. Your freedoms are at stake. Your children's future is at stake. The name and character of God are at stake. "Why should the nation say, 'where is their God?'" As never before, we are in desperate need of the forgiving, healing hand of God. Let us join together in earnest, effective prayer that God would sweep across our sick nation with a great revival of conviction of sin and commitment of obedience.
Are you willing to bend your knees and heart and meet his conditions? Are you willing to pay the price of humility, repentance, and persistent, prevailing prayer? May God make us willing!
The stock market and the economy are going up. Yet the morality in our nation, holiness in our churches, evangelism, faithful millennials, etc., are on the decline. Like Moses, we must stand in the gap for our nation in 2018 -- the need is far greater than it was in 1986.
Thanking God for 2017 -- We are beginning the New Year not just with a rising stock market, but also with a number of measurable pro-life, pro-faith, pro-family public policy gains. President Trump and Congress have been able to achieve several of the Christian and conservative community's policy objectives. The president has been an outspoken advocate for and defender of evangelicals and conservative Catholics and Jews. The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) has highlighted 17 reasons we have to celebrate: 1) Christian prayer has been welcomed back to the White House; 2) The president is moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a move Congress has repeatedly resolved to do since 1995; 3) The Museum of the Bible has been opened in Washington, D.C., within walking distance of the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall; 4) President Trump's appointee, Christian and conservative Judge Neil Gorsuch, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and is seated as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court; 5) The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Little Sisters of the Poor, upholding their rights of conscience and religious liberty and against the Obama Mandate forcing religious non-profit organizations to purchase insurance for their employees that cover abortifacient contraceptives; 6) President Trump used his bully pulpit to advocate for Christmas and to reverse the anti-Christmas political correctness that has crept into official Washington, many of our state governments, public schools, and corporate America; 7) A prominent, pro-life evangelical governor and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Pence, now serves as Vice President of the United States; 8) President Trump openly opposed and targeted the Johnson Amendment for revision, to sync IRS code with the Constitution, guaranteeing churches and nonprofit organizations the right to speak out on political issues and candidates without threat or penalty; 9) Our pro-life president reinstated the Mexico City Policy (preventing tax dollars from being used to support/promote abortion abroad) and promises to make the Hyde Amendment permanent (illegal to do likewise in the U.S.); 10) President Trump reversed President Obama's order that prohibited the states from withdrawing state funding to Planned Parenthood; 11) Members of the president's Cabinet meet regularly for Bible study; 12) A Federal Court upheld the right of Congress to open its daily sessions with prayer, dismissing a case brought by the Freedom From Religion Foundation to end the 228 year-long practice; 13) The U.S. Ambassador to the UN has consistently and repeatedly supported Israel, defending against a plainly anti-Semitic bias among the member nations; 14) U.S. Forces have been successfully deployed to defeat ISIS and end the genocide of Christians in Iraq and Syria; 15) The administration is circumventing the U.N. to provide aid directly to Christian refugees fleeing ISIS; 16) The White House Press office has revamped priorities to make way for conservative and Christian agencies, where previous administrations have catered to the liberal press; 17) President Trump has gradually, but progressively professed faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (CBN-New Analysis; Victories to Push; Religious Liberty Defended and Advanced).
- Thanks be to God for His victories in very hard-fought battles in 2017. May God launch His praying people into 2018, committed to a broad prayer vision like that outlined in The Rebirth of America, above, and in the focused battles that must be won if America is to be exalted (made great again) by righteousness! May 2018 be a major turning point for the kind of peace Paul spoke of in 1 Tim 2:1-2. (Ex 18:21; Is 1:18-19; 28:5-6; 55:6;66:8; Hab 2:1-4; Mt 17:21; Eph 3:20; 1 Tim 2:1-2; Rev 4:11)
Advancing a Righteous Public Policy 2018 -- Conservative Christians did not get everything they hoped for in 2017, but, as the Apostle Paul wrote "for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries" (1 Cor 16:9). Despite the "resistance movement" and the "deep state" and despite the odds against the advance of righteousness (Pr 14:34), we have the promises of God to support us, the political and public policy tools our Forefathers bequeathed us, and strong advocates in the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court. Nevertheless, we wrestle not against flesh and blood (Eph 6:10-20) in our struggle for the survival and advancement of righteousness in our nation. Prayer is our first line of defense and offense! The fights ahead will require serious, prevailing prayer and fasting.
Finally, 1) President Trump has reappointed leading LGBT activist Chai Feldblum to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
