Commentary

April 15, 2014

At Carillon Elementary School, teachers on cafeteria duty weren't monitoring lunch; they were out to lunch on students' rights. Hello, I'm Tony Perkins with the Family Research Council in Washington. First, prayer wasn't allowed in the classroom. Now it isn't even allowed in the cafeteria! One five-year-old found that out the hard way when a teacher stopped her from bowing her head over lunch. "But it's good to pray," the little girl said. No, the teacher replied, "It's not good." When she got home, Marcos Perez was shocked to hear what happened to his daughter. He fired off an letter to the principal, who promised to remind the staff that prayer is allowed. But for the Perezes, who were already concerned about Florida's Common Core, the damage had already been done. They pulled their daughter out of Carillon and decided to homeschool her. As for the other kids, it's a shame. Judging by the state of our culture, more not less prayer is need in our schools!
