Prayer Targets: 'Consecrate the People,' Prop 8, DOMA and the American Church
July 03, 2013
Consecrate the congregation..."Spare your people, O Lord, and make not your heritage a reproach, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'" Joel 2:16-17
Dear Praying Friends,
Claude King serves as Discipleship Specialist at LifeWay Christian Resources. His relationship with Dr. Henry Blackaby led to their co-authoring, "Experiencing God," "Fresh Encounter" and more. Author or coauthor of 21 books, King is a leader in the movement to revive Biblical Solemn Assembly. He leads workshops and seminars and consults with pastors on matters of discipleship, prayer and solemn assembly. King is also a partner with us in Call2Fall. He writes:
Brothers and Sisters, we are at a critical time in our nation's history when God could very easily release His judgment on our nation for our sin and wickedness. Consider...
- God has established a limit to the amount of sin He will tolerate before He brings judgment and wrath in response (Gen. 15:16; Mt 23:32; 1 Th 2:16)...
- The measure of judgment we use is the measure of judgment we will receive (Eze 7:27; Mt 7:1-5)...
- Only those who are right with God are prepared for a time of God's judgment (Eze 14:13-14; Jer 7:8-11)...
- As God's people, we have a choice: ...either see the pending danger and return to the Lord before He brings judgment, or... wait until after the disasters to cry out for mercy and repent (Lev 23; 2 Chr 20:1-30; 34:14-35:19; Jonah 3; Neh 8-10)...
Call a Sacred Assembly - In the Book of Joel, God's people had experienced great destruction from swarms of locusts. As a spiritual leader, Joel knew the remedy was to call God's people to return to Him in a sacred assembly. When the people responded, God heard, forgave, and restored the land (Joel 1-3). Brothers and Sisters, now is the time to call God's people in the United States and in our churches to repentance (see Eze 33:11; Joel 1:14-15; 2:1, 13-17)... (see Sound the Alarm, Call a Sacred Assembly, 2003; Read it in its entirety and more at: Consecrate - Pastors Helps).
The Call2Fall is a catalyst for the kind of prayer God calls for in times like these every day. New acts of tyranny in Washington, D.C., the abandonment of God and distortion of our Constitution, the devastating mismanagement of our national treasury, the usurpation of parents and indoctrination of our children with anti-Christian, pagan religion, socialistic political ideology and sexual immorality--all these and more severely endanger our churches, homes, and nation.
As a follow-up to Call2Fall, we invite you to follow Claude King's powerful 8-day series, "Consecrate the People," beginning Monday, July 8th. The series will help churches, small groups and individuals to become part of the solution to our nation's spiritual problems. Please visit the Call2Fall Blog beginning the first Monday after the 4th of July - Monday, July 8th. The first segment will be a comprehensive introduction. Links will appear on the Call2Fall Facebook Page (please make sure to "like" us!). Please also post your own prayers and testimonies about what happened at your church last Sunday!
U.S. Supreme Court Marriage Rulings - Decisions for United States v. Windsor (DOMA) and Hollingsworth v. Perry (California Proposition 8) were both announced last Wednesday. Both were 5-4 opinions that favored proponents of same-sex "marriage." But the Court fell short of mandating same-sex "marriage" nationwide as activist homosexuals had hoped. From the beginning, at seemingly every turn, the process has been manipulated to prevent the voters of California, a majority of whom voted to uphold one-man, one-woman marriage, from having their vote honored. See the links above for expert analysis.
California Marriage Amendment - Proposition 8 - the U.S. Supreme Court refused to recognize the legal standing of the appellants - the ProtectMarriage.com Coalition. The mostly Christian coalition shepherded Proposition 8 from the beginning, through the referendum, the election campaign in which 52% of Californians voted for the Marriage Amendment, and then the state and federal court challenges. When the State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the measure and opponents sued in federal court, Attorney General Jerry Brown and former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reneged on their duty to defend the Amendment on behalf of the people. While recognized by all the courts until Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled that the appellants had no standing to sue and sent the case back to the state, effectively vindicating openly homosexual and former District Judge Vaughn Walker's prior ruling. Immediately, homosexual advocates pursued the 9th Circuit Court to require counties to begin issuing marriage licenses immediately. They obliged, without regard for the 25 day wait required by the U.S. Supreme Court, but U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy refused to enforce the waiting period. Such irregular and illegal shenanigans in favor of same-sex "marriage" seemed to be standard operating procedure throughout this nearly six year marathon. American law is increasingly becoming an exercise in raw will and power by judges and executives with the support of our U.S. Supreme Court. The bottom line is that "government of, by and for the people" has taken a major body blow. Our Supreme Court has set itself above God and His law, and has empowered elected officials everywhere to do likewise, freeing them to disregard their legal duties under the law.
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) - Drafted by Family Research Council passed in 1996 by a super-majority in both Houses of Congress and signed by President Clinton, DOMA established the definition of marriage for federal purposes, including eligibility for some 1,100+ plus federal spousal benefits. It also protected the states from being forced to recognize homosexual "marriages" performed in other states and nations. At the time of the ruling, twelve states had same-sex "marriage" plus D.C. Like Jerry Brown with Proposition 8, in 2011 President Obama unilaterally announced that he would no longer defend or enforce DOMA. Congress had to hire a lawyer to defend DOMA. Obama began incrementally to ignore the law and to provide same-sex "marriage" benefits, not only to "married" same-sex government employees, but to same-sex "domestic partners." Homosexual activists have now set their sights on overturning 37 state marriage laws and 30 state amendments. Most disappointing in the Supreme Court ruling was the performance of Justice Anthony Kennedy, the "swing vote," who stated in so many words that Congress' passage of DOMA was an act of intentional discrimination that made homosexuals second-class citizens, and violated the equal justice clause in the constitution. Kennedy thus signaled how he would view future cases. While it has not played out, the table has been set for this Supreme Court to further erode religious liberty.
- May God move upon his pastors across America to study, to understand, to articulate, and to prepare their flocks with the kind of resolve that will be required of them in the days ahead. May American Christians, like Daniel and the three Hebrew young men, be unbending when commanded to violate their faith and conscience. May God help believers to be examples of devotion to both God's love and truth in a day when multitudes are confused about what they mean. May God raise up God-fearing men to lead a mighty revival to turn the tide in our nation! (Pr 29:2; Dan 3:12-18; 6:1 ff; Mt 10:16-28; Acts 5:29; 1 Tim 2:15; 1 Pet 3:15).
America will now see even more Christians criminalized, fined, and jailed for refusing to bow to this same-sex idolatry. Christians must now know what they believe; churches and other Christian groups must codify their beliefs and be prepared to defend them in court. Only massive revival will turn the tide, which is why embracing the Call2Fall every day is so important. Thank you for praying (Eph 6:10-20, esp. v 18).
