Dear Praying Friends,
Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer has served Chicago's Moody Church as Pastor for over 33 years and is a respected scholar and pastor to pastors (see bio). In When a Nation Forgets God, Lutzer chronicles the cultural streams of 1930's Germany that made it possible for Nazism to triumph and demonstrates some of the disturbing parallels in America today. Here is the answer as to "Why?"
In April 1945, amid the ruins of a defeated Germany, Pastor Helmut Thielicke spoke movingly to his congregation... about... all that had happened... The heart of the matter, he said, was this: "Denying God and casting down the cross is never a merely private decision that concerns only my own inner life and my personal salvation [it] brings the most brutal consequences for the whole of historical life and especially for our own people. 'God is not mocked.' " In history, he says, the invisible is mightier than the visible. Anybody who still had not grasped that Germany..."was wrecked precisely on this dangerous rock called 'God' and nothing else, has no eyes to see... he sees only individual catastrophes; he no longer sees the basic, cardinal catastrophe behind them all." ... Casting down the cross of Christ! Intoxicated with success! Substituting the temporary for the permanent! Thus was the church and the entire country crushed, crushed on the rock called God, "who is not mocked." Destroyed for being blinded by the pride of nationalism instead of being humbled by its great need for repentance. The church stood with pride, but would not bow in humility...
Niemoller has a word for... America... Early in 1934, he...prophetically declared... "We... the whole Church and the whole community... have been thrown into the Tempter's sieve, and he is shaking and the wind is blowing, and it must now become manifest whether we are wheat or chaff! Verily, a time of sifting has come upon us, and even the most indolent and peaceful person among us must see that the calm of a meditative Christianity is at an end... for the hopeful and expectant Christian Church-it is testing time, and God is giving Satan a free hand, so he may shake us up and so that it may be seen what manner of men we are! ... he who is not ready to suffer, he who called himself a Christian only because he thereby hoped to gain something good...is blown away like chaff by the wind of time."...
At last we come to the heart of the matter: the cross reminds us that the battle is not so much between church and state as it is within our own hearts. If Christ has all of us, if the cross stands above politics and the world as Bonhoeffer has reminded us, we shall overcome regardless of the cost... Christ will set the record straight. Those who are faithful to Him and His cross will be rewarded... rival crosses will be exposed and judged... every knee shall bow and "every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Until then, God is glorified by our steadfastness. If we suffer faithfully, the cross will be exalted in the world. Bonhoeffer was right when he said that it is before that cross and not before us that the world trembles... (Erwin W. Lutzer, When a Nation Forgets God: 7 Lessons We Must Learn From Nazi Germany, 2009)
U.S. believers are being tested today. Is it too late for the secularist, pagan assault upon our nation to be stopped? The Christian roots of America go deep. Those roots are being watered by extraordinary prayers of a faith-filled and growing interdenominational prayer movement. Lutzer agrees that political involvement is necessary but that believers' embrace of the cross of Jesus Christ trumps all. Only if sufficient numbers of God's people wholly embrace Christ's cross now is there hope for our nation to be turned. If not, those who embrace the cross will take their victorious stand amid persecution and much suffering!
U.S. & Israel & Iran - Most Americans and a majority of Congress have shown strong support for Israel, our nation's closest ally in the Middle East, and have little reason trust in Iran, which has repeatedly promised to "wipe Israel off the map" and "destroy the U.S." After a phone conversation with newly installed Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, President Barack Obama unilaterally changed the U.S. long-time posture toward Iran. John Kerry, now Secretary of the State Department that for years has declared Iran a terrorist sponsoring nation, is pushing a U.S. deal with the "P5+1 group," the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council: Britain, Russia, China, Germany and the U.S., plus France. The compromise would reduce sanctions on the terrorist nation in return for approval of Iran's manufacture of nuclear fuel, which is easily convertible to weapons grade material. Some have likened such a plan of appeasement to that of Neville Chamberlain and the Munich Agreement of 1938. Because God promises to bless nations that bless Israel, this issue is paramount among God's praying people (see Perkins on Israel, Netanyahu Blitz, Relationships Strained, French Nearly Scuttles "Sucker's Deal," Corker).
- May God, His people, and or elected representatives act to rebuild our faith and commitment to Israel and to stop this irrational appeasement of Iran (Gen 12:1-3; Ps 37:27-40; 141:8-10; 146:3-8; Pr 4:7, 27:23-28; Zech 2:1-13; 12:2-3; Rom 14:23b).
Obamacare - Former President Bill Clinton, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and other liberals in office are beginning to come out publicly in favor of "fixing" Obamacare. Over one million Californians have lost their health insurance because of Obamacare. As Senator Max Baucus (D-MT and a chief architect for the law) predicted, it has become a "Train Wreck." (Much more; see links: Clinton; California; Feinstein, Others; Navigators; Deceive; No Improvement; Delay).
- May God help Americans insist that our elected leaders not to fix Obamacare but scrap it and start over carefully and sensibly! (Ex 15:26; Pr 22:3; Is 28:9-10; Jer 17:2-10; Mt 7:24-27; Lk 14:28-32)
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act - The misnamed bill will impose open homosexuality and transgenderism upon all U.S. private and public workplaces just as the repeal of DADT did the U.S. Military. ENDA has already passed the U.S. Senate (see FRC's ENDA: Threat to Free Markets and Freedom of Conscience and Religion).
- May God give House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Congress the moral strength to reject ENDA! (Ex 23:2; Dt 28; Josh 1:8 ff; Is 10:1; Rom 1:32; Eph 6:10-20; Rev 12:11)
Military Religious Liberty - On Veterans Day, FRC and a coalition of conservative groups ran an ad in the Military Times, offering servicemen who have experienced violations against their religious liberties a place to go for free, confidential legal help. As reports about such violations have grown, so have the numbers of those coming forward to report such cases. The military's assault on religious freedom is occurring just when our troops need faith the most (see FRC Press Release, MilitaryFreedom.org, see also, sexual assault in the military: 2012, 2013).
- May Congress Act to pass the National Defense Authorization Act to include new provisions to protect our servicemen's freedom of conscience and religious liberty! (Mt 5:19; Acts 24:16; Gal 5:1; 1 Tim 1:5; Phm 1:271 Th 3:7-8; 2 Th 2:14-17)
Finally, please continue to pray over the state marriage battlegrounds; the President's judicial and other nominees; the New Mexico photographer's legal appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court (re: same-sex marriage/religious liberty); and the terrible typhoon in Philippines that has killed thousands and left a half million homeless. Thank you for praying!
