It is the Spirit who gives life... The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63; Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor. 3:17

Over 20 years a successful businessman and job creator, John Bona is a believer in the American free enterprise system. His business experience and study of Scripture motivate him to challenge Christians to stand for religious, economic, and political liberty. Husband, father, grandfather, author, movie producer, and radio host, these excerpts are from his newly released, The Liberty Book:

Liberty and Life Come from God: There is much confusion across the nation as to the source of liberty and life. Many people look to the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution as defining sources and protection for these most valuable assets, while others turn to political philosophers such as John Locke, Bastiat, or Thomas Paine.

Well-read Christians may go to John Knox, Martin Luther, John Calvin, or Heinrich Bullinger for wisdom about political questions. And many citizens attempt to work out their own philosophies informed neither by Scripture nor by any well-known authority. The Declaration declares:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness-that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

These words do indeed express the correct understanding that liberty and life depend on God for their existence and for their status as rights (not privileges). Under law based solely on human opinion, people do not have rights but only privileges. You may do only whatever the state decides based on its own fickle opinions, but if God is the beginning and guarantor of liberty and life, then the people have rights that exist and live outside the will of those in office. The opinions of people change with the seasons in contradiction to the Word of God: “My son, fear the LORD and the king; do not associate with those who are given to change” (Pr 24:21)

The God of the Bible does not change His mind (1 Sam 15:29). The prophet Samuel says, “Also the Glory of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind.” Hence, if we want rights concerning liberty and life, then we must base our laws on godly ideals and claim those rights under God and not under any manmade system of law...

This is an American issue... It defines who we are and what kind of society we will create. We often hear that society must be neutral, that pluralism demands the removal of God and godly thought from the public square. This is what pluralism demands... If we think it likely that the Lord will suffer unseating by man and that man will rule in His place, then we are worse than drooling fools who should be locked up. Humanists demand that God must shut up, leaving them the control of all thought, all morals, all political organization according to their own desires. Speaking of godless people, the apostle Paul famously wrote, “Professing to be wise they became fools” (Rom 1:22). But we desire to be people of better character who actually do become wise from God’s Word (Bona, The Liberty Book, Ch. 9). Learn more about the Story of Liberty.

Liberty and Life are bound up together in God. The Founders understood this well. When in 1973 abortion was declared a constitutional right, the erosion of American liberty began to accelerate. We are headed toward anarchy, tyranny, or a return to God. Our federal government is forcing sexual confusion upon future generations of our children and forcing American taxpayers to fund abortion despite the violation of their consciences and faith. This kind of despotism never even entered the minds of our Forefathers.

Wrestling for Life and Liberty - Last Tuesday, a Texas judge dismissed the last remaining charges against David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt, who, on behalf of The Center for Medical Progress, went undercover to produce video implicating Planned Parenthood in the illicit sale of aborted baby parts. The expose’ led to Congress creating a special committee to conduct an investigation both into Planned Parenthood, but also the entire abortion industry, especially concerned with the trafficking of aborted infant tissue. After the ruling, Daleiden said he will release even “more shocking and damning” footage involving Planned Parenthood once a gag order is lifted in a civil case in California. Both Daleiden and Merritt had been charged with tampering with government documents (drivers’ licenses) to gain access at Planned Parenthood clinics, a felony carrying up to 20 years in prison.

A grand jury that investigated charges that Planned Parenthood had misused fetal tissue ended up indicting Daleiden and Merritt, a move widely understood to have been a political setup. The regional Planned Parenthood President accused the pro-life activists of spreading “malicious lies about Planned Parenthood in order to advance their antiabortion agenda.” Daleiden argued that his organization used “the same undercover techniques that investigative journalists have used for decades in exercising our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and of the press” and that he followed all applicable laws. He added that the abortion giant “still cannot deny the admissions from their leadership about fetal organ sales captured on video for all the world to see.”

Chief Abortion Executive Addresses Democratic Convention – The evening of the day Daleiden was vindicated, Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood and the organization’s Political Action Fund, addressed the entire Democratic National Convention, boldly using the word “abortion” three times – a first. Yet the increasingly more strident party platform, approved by delegates the evening before Richards’s speech, pledges that:

“Every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion-regardless of where she lives, how much money she makes, or how she is insured. We believe that reproductive health is core to women’s, men’s, and young people’s health and wellbeing. We will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers, which provide critical health services to millions of people. We will continue to oppose-and seek to overturn-federal and state laws and policies that impede a woman’s access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment.”

In her acceptance speech, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton pledged to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which would result in a mandate that taxpayers fund hundreds of thousands of abortions each year even if they are religiously or otherwise conscientiously opposed to doing so. Cry Out America! - Our friends at the Awakening America Alliance have worked hard to organize this year’s observance of Cry Out America! Sunday, September 11, 2016. This designated annual day of repentance and prayer is held on Patriot’s Day, the anniversary of 9/11/2001. Cry Out America! is a biblical response. He calls us to repent and to seek His face (as per Dt 28: all2 Chr 7:14; Ps 20:7). Perhaps God will restore His hand of protection to our Land. If My People 2016 is collaborating with Cry Out America! to sponsor a joint prayer meeting at David’s Tent in Washington, D.C. on the evening of September 11th (read Letter re: Cry Out America!)

  • May Cry Out America and If My People 2016 succeed in bringing more people into repentance and fervent prayer for our nation than ever before. And may God hear and have mercy on us! (2 Chr 7:14Is 58:1Dan 9:18-19Luke 18:1-8; Jas 5:16)

Finally, please join us in praying over these important matters: 1) The 2016 Values Voter Summit, September 9-11, is critically important this election year. 2) Illinois GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law that will force Christian doctors to refer, promote, refer, and explain the benefits of abortion to their patients. 3) A federal judge is pondering whether to allow HB2, North Carolinas bathroom bill, which requires people to use the bathroom designated for their biological sex, to stay in force while opponents pursue all of their legal options to try to undo it. 4) North Carolina researchers have found that nearly two-thirds of deaths in the black and Hispanic communities were caused by abortion in 2009. 5) Dr. Wayne Grudem, revered Professor of Theology, General Editor for the ESV Study Bible and a good friend of FRC was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease but is responding well to treatment. He is at peace, but open to prayer. Let us ask God to heal Dr. Grudem. Thank you for praying!
