"In His name the nations will put their hope" Matthew 12:21 ESV
Dear Praying Friends,
On May 2, 2013, believers across America will observe the National Day of Prayer. This special day reminds us of our nation's utter dependence upon God, the role of God's people in keeping Him at the center of our public and private lives, and our national institutions. The only way we can hope to preserve the glorious benefits and blessings which God has endowed our nation is through prayer and action, but prayer must come first.
The National Day of Prayer couldn't have come at a better time. I would have said at a "more urgent" time, but unless we humble ourselves and pray - not just tomorrow, but every day - things in our nation will only grow worse.
God is not moved by the "Now I lay me down to sleep" rote prayer. He is looking for fresh, fervent, and faith-filled prayer. He is not stirred by "God bless us four and no more" self-centered prayer. He is looking for sacrificial, spirit-led, biblically honest, and repentant prayer. God is calling America and especially Christians to humble ourselves, pray, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways.
2 Chronicles 7:14 is the roadmap God has laid out for us to obtain His extraordinary promise to our nation "IF" we will follow it. His is a grand promise; to heal our land! Abraham Lincoln led America in crying out to God in 1863, the middle of the Civil War:
And, insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!
It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness (see Lincoln Online).
The scourge presently upon our nation - wars, devastating weather, acts of terrorism, confusion and failure among our government leaders, spiritual confusion in many of our churches, decimation of the family, economic decline, government oppression, advancing socialism, government promoted and protected abortion, homosexualized politics, etc., are all the fruits and consequences of individual and collective sin and a departure from the God of the Bible.
The Apostle Paul warned us plainly that God's righteous wrath is the result of willful disobedience: "all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness... envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful, who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them" (Romans 1:14-32). Unfortunately, all these evils are now woven into our popular culture. The church has not been as bright and salty as we've needed to be. But a tremendous opportunity lies ahead of us, if we will but humble ourselves and pray!
America's 62nd Annual National Day of Prayer - The theme for this year's NDP is "Pray for America," the key verse, Matthew 12:21: "In His name the nations will put their hope" (Matt. 12:21). This year's Honorary Chairman, Calvary Chapel Pastor, Greg Laurie, has written a prayer that believers at over 40,000 public prayer events will recite in unity. This is the prayer:
Father, we come to You to pray for our nation, the United States of America.
How You have blessed us through the years, Lord! We rightly sing, "America, America, God shed His grace on thee." Yet we see trouble in our culture today. We see the breakdown of the family, crippling addictions, and random acts of horrific violence.
Lord, we need Your help in America. In recent days, we have done our best to remove Your Word and Your counsel from our courtrooms, classrooms and culture. It seems, as President Lincoln once said, that we have "forgotten God." But Lord, You have not forgotten us! You can bless and help and revive our country again.
Scripture tells us that "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" (Prov. 14:34). Lord in Your mercy, we ask that You would exalt our country again. We have had a number of great awakenings in America. We have experienced times of refreshing, and revivals that changed not only the spiritual but also the moral landscape. As the psalmist said, "Will You not revive us again, so that Your people may rejoice in You?" (Psa. 85:6).
That is our prayer for America today, Lord. Send a mighty spiritual awakening that will turn the hearts of men and women, boys and girls back to You. You have told us if we will humble ourselves and pray, and seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways, that You will forgive our sins and heal our land (2 Chr. 7:14).
Forgive us today, Lord, and heal this troubled land that we love so much.
We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Find a prayer event in your area here. If there is not an event close enough to your home, organize a family prayer time, or a conference call with praying friends. This morning, FRC will host the National Day of Prayer Task Force's Men's Prayer Meeting. See the recorded webcast here. In preparation for tomorrow, meditate on Deuteronomy 28: all; 2 Chronicles 7:13-14; 1 Timothy 2:1-8. God is our nation's hope! Cry out to God who made us!
After the National Day of Prayer, tomorrow, make sure to put the Call2Fall on your Calendar and urge your pastor and church to participate on Sunday, June 30th. The National Day of Prayer and the Call2Fall need to become a way of life for believers and churches in America, until and after God hears our prayer, forgives our sin and heals our land!
