Prayer Targets: Solemn Assembly, Marriage Decision, Defense Authorization Act, IRS
June 20, 2013
Dear Praying Friends,
Bishop P. Douglas Small is President of Alive Ministries. As International Prayer Ministry Coordinator for the Church of God denomination, Doug travels the US and abroad speaking in churches, conferences and prayer events. His numerous books help churches to become "houses of prayer" (Mt 21:13). Doug helped his denomination to become a forerunner in the solemn assembly movement in the late 20th Century. Call2Fall points toward a Biblical Solemn Assembly. Doug's thorough Spiritual Renewal Manual & Guide to Solemn Assembly is free here, and his prolific Call2Fall blogs, here. He writes:
In 1962, fifty-one years ago, the Supreme Court ruled against prayer in school, and sent a cultural-legal signal of approval for a veritable assault on public prayer, and thereby the public invocation of God's Presence in and over our nation. Many in Congress were outraged. President Kennedy supported the ruling, and urged people to pray - "at home." Thus began, with two branches of the Government on board, a war against public prayer; and against the Christian faith as a 'shared public experience,' expressed primarily through corporate prayer.
No one could have guessed we would arrive at a place where prayer, particularly prayer in the name of Jesus, would create such an outrage. Distinctly Christian prayer - not prayer to a vague deity, not pluralistic, politically-correct, multi-faith prayer - but fervent, Bible-based prayer by believing Christians, to the Living God to whom the Founders deferred is now unacceptable, and sought to be illegal. How have we allowed this to happen? Suddenly, the whole culture is upside down. Holy speech - prayer - is suppressed; while outrageous and obscene speech is protected. Right is wrong; and Evil is championed. We are re-living Israel's history - and now the nation is in peril.
When a nation sins - that 'nation' must repent. There is a moment, a line, over which any corporate entity crosses that no amount of intermediary repentance can suffice to bring redemption. Only the entity itself - the city, the family, the church, or nation - can, by its own repentant prayer, avert judgment and turn the tide of God's favor. That mechanism, that Scriptural means, is called a 'Solemn Assembly.'
Kings, heads of state, priests or spiritual leaders, representatives of the people, and prophets - called for such gatherings. And when the people repented, God heard and saved whole nations!
But the idea of 'corporate' sin is not even on our radar screen, today. We 'privatize' the concept of sin. But sin always affects others.... Finally corruption advances until the whole of the culture has become immoral. Only God-prescribed 'corporate' action can alter the course of that corporate entity - be it a family, church, town, city, or nation. When nations sin, God judges them in this present life, not eternity. Only with corporate brokenness and repentance can and will God wipe the slate clean... How? Call a Solemn Assembly! (Adapted, COG Prayer Ministry Newsletter, 9/20/12).
FRC President Tony Perkins envisions a day when 40,000 Pastors from across America (a tithe of the nation's 400,000 pastors), will gather in Washington, D.C. for a solemn assembly to seek the face of God for our country. In the meantime, the American church is the entity that needs to repent. God said, "If my people will humble themselves... then will I... heal their land (2 Chr 7:14). Please pray for Call2Fall as we close in on Sunday, June 30th.
Marriage Decision - The U.S. Supreme Court will likely announce its ruling on the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the California marriage amendment (Proposition 8) next week.
- May God give wisdom, courage and boldness to pastors and Christian leaders across America to equip his people to stand if the ruling is negative, and in any case to advance the cause of marriage with unflagging energy and enthusiasm, until our nation and its lawmakers have been restored to moral sanity on this, mankind's first and most important God-given institution (Gen 1:1; 2:18, 21-25; Mt 19:4-6; Eph 5:25-33).
Defense Authorization Act - Having succeeded in exposing the US military to open homosexuality, President Obama is openly opposing an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act by Rep. John Fleming (R-La.), which would offer some protection to servicemen and chaplains in the light of violations of their fundamental religious liberties. Meanwhile, the Pentagon under Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has ordered the military to open up all its combat positions to women applicants by the year 2015. For some, it would seem that the President's liberal social agenda is more important to him than the safety of the American people. It is a sad thing to see the same senior military leaders who just a few years ago would have stood stalwart to resist such actions to now boldly declare that these actions are the right thing to do (see Defending our Defenders, Obama, Women in Combat)
- May God intervene and Congress prevail in using its authority to check and balance an executive branch run amok. May common sense prevail and our military be preserved. God grant that our fighting men will be free to worship and obey you from the heart (Dt 22:5; 28:1, 7, 15, 25; Ps 127:1; Rom 1:32; Eph 6:10 ff; 1 Pet 3:7).
Abolish the IRS - In light of revelations that some 500+ conservative, pro-life and Christian organizations have been targeted by the IRS for unique, unfair, and illegal treatment, Tony Perkins has called for the abolishment of the IRS. Obamacare, which will begin to be implemented in full force just months from now, will use an army of some 17,000 additional IRS agents to enforce its provisions, including the imposition of fines, and potentially imprisonment. Tony believes now is the time both to stop the encroachment on Americans' fundamental liberty and to reform the tax system (Perkins).
- May God stir the American people to say "no more" to illicit and unconstitutional acts against the American people by an out of control, politically motivated government! May the American people recognize that the scandals will only multiply if they remain passive. Following repentance at Call2Fall on Sunday, June 30, may Americans rise from their knees on Independence Day, determined to use their citizenship righteously to defend faith, family, freedom and property, while we still can (Dan 3:16-18; 6:7-18; Acts 5:29; Gal 5:1).
Still more: Please pray against state and local so-called "Bathroom Bills" now on the rise; the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), now in process, would impose similar foolishness and so much more upon families and businesses, nationwide; any immigration bill that includes special rights for LGBT immigrants, legal and illegal. Pray for Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) who has introduced a Parental Rights Amendment (see Plan B, Meadows, Amendment). Plead for God's intervention in the case of Hobby Lobby and other Christian owned businesses who will be fined by the Obama Administration. President Steve Green says the family business "cannot sustain" the $1.3 million daily fine the administration has imposed upon them for refusing to comply with the abortifacient insurance mandate to which they object on religious grounds (see Christian Post). Finally, thank God for the House's passage of Rep. Trent Franks' (R-Ariz.) Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (see LifeSiteNews). Thank you for praying!
