Free Indeed: The Biblical View of Freedom and its Economic, Political and Religious Implications
March 7, 2017 12:00 ET

Throughout human history, people of all cultures have sought freedom. Many religious and political views emphasize a freedom from all constraints. The biblical view of freedom paradoxically involves throwing off the bondage of sin and becoming a servant of Christ. In fact, the Christian ideal state of living includes more than just an experience of inner freedom, it involves an external effort to promote the freedom and flourishing of others.

In his talk, theologian and author Dr. Art Lindsley will explain the biblical view of freedom and how it differentiates from other secular views. He will further discuss the societal implications of the biblical view of freedom on the political, economic, and religious spheres. In particular, he will explain how free market principles of private property, limited government, and the freedom to innovate are grounded in biblical freedom. Dr. Lindsley will challenge those who adhere to these biblical values to follow their external implications and work toward a flourishing society. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Dr. Lindsley's latest 44-page booklet, Free Indeed: Living Life in Light of the Biblical View of Freedom.

Rev. Dr. Art Lindsley is the Vice President of Theological Initiatives at the Institute for Faith, Work & Economics (IFWE), where he oversees the development of a biblical theology that integrates faith, work, and economics. Most recently, he served as President and Senior Fellow at the C.S. Lewis Institute since 1987. Prior to that, he was Director of Educational Ministries at the Ligonier Valley Study Center and Staff Specialist with the Coalition for Christian Outreach in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He is an editor of and contributing author to IFWE's For the Least of These: A Biblical Answer to Poverty (Zondervan, 2015). In his chapter, Dr. Lindsley walks through Leviticus 25 to explain common myths about Jubilee. He also examines claims that Acts 2-5 teaches socialism, and he demonstrates how the text does not do so.

He is also the author of C.S. Lewis's Case for Christ, True Truth, and Love: The Ultimate Apologetic. He is co-author with R.C. Sproul and John Gerstner of Classical Apologetics, and he often writes articles on theology, apologetics, C.S. Lewis, and the lives of many other authors and teachers.

Rev. Dr. Lindsley earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Seattle Pacific University, Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. Rev. Dr. Lindsley, his wife Connie, and their two boys Trey and Jonathan make their home in Arlington, Virginia.
