Human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and pornography are all linked, and all three are on the rise across the globe. This presents a great crisis for society. As of 2016, the Walk Free Foundation’s Global Slavery Index estimates that there are almost 45.8 million people living in slavery around the world today.[i] Most of those in slavery are forced into labor, but some estimates indicate that 4.5 million people are slaves in the sex industry.[ii] Sexual exploitation is a problem in every country, and it cannot be overlooked. As the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) website says, “sexual exploitation is no one’s ‘job,’” nor should it ever be. Of the 7,621 total reported cases of human trafficking in 2016 in the U.S., 5,593 were cases of sex trafficking according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.[iii] Of these total reported cases, 2,412 involved minors in 2016.[iv] These numbers have been increasing every year.[v] Many more cases exist, but are never reported or discovered by authorities.
