Dr. Kenyn Cureton (bio) leads FRC's national ministry to pastors and churches. A pastor for 20 years and New Testament scholar, Dr. Cureton's passion is to study, preach, and teach American history from the perspective of Divine Providence. This excerpt from his 366-day devotional Lost Episodes in American History is timely on the eve of the 75th anniversary of D-Day:
On June 6, 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt led the nation in prayer as 160,000 American and Allied troops were storming and establishing beachheads on the coast of Normandy to liberate occupied France on D-Day. Speaking to a hushed and expectant nation, huddled around their radios, and anticipating great loss of life to gain victory, President Roosevelt declared:
"My Fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:
"Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.
"Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.
"They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.
"They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest -- until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men's souls will be shaken with the violences of war. For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate. They fight to let justice arise, and tolerance and goodwill among all Thy people. They yearn but for the end of battle, for their return to the haven of home.
"Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom.
"And for us at home -- fathers, mothers, children, wives, sisters, and brothers of brave men overseas, whose thoughts and prayers are ever with them -- help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice.
"Many people have urged that I call the nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long, and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.
"Give us strength, too -- strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces.
"And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.
"And, O Lord, give us faith. Give us faith in Thee; faith in our sons; faith in each other; faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment -- let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.
"With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogances. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace -- a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.
"Thy will be done, Almighty God.
President Roosevelt's D-Day Prayer is another lost episode in American history.
Read and Reflect: Read Luke 22:42 and reflect on Jesus' prayer to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane as he anticipated great suffering on the cross and separation from the Father from becoming sin for us and recall the closing of Roosevelt's prayer.
- Heavenly Father, we honor those brave souls who stormed beaches by rushing into a hail of bullets and those who parachuted behind enemy lines to free a continent and preserve our freedom. We are also grateful for a leader who led the nation in prayer during that desperate day and who prayed as Jesus prayed: "Thy will be done," in Jesus Name, Amen.

We will pause tomorrow to honor the memory of thousands of Americans who gave their lives, thousands more who spilled their blood with serious injuries, and the thousands of allies who mixed their blood with ours on D-Day (10,000+ allied casualties; 4,414 confirmed dead). We are grateful to God for a generation of Americans who stood up to evil in their day -- Adolph Hitler and his Nazi war machine. Driven by ethnic bigotries, men became monsters, slaughtered millions of innocent Jews and committed unthinkable atrocities against mankind. Their evil ideology could not be allowed to take over the world. Thank God for men and women who did their part, risking and giving their lives to stop them.
As President Roosevelt rightly declared, theirs was a "struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity." But they were also fighting to preserve the lives and liberty of our children and generations yet unborn.
Illinois Passes Most Extreme Pro-Abortion Bill in America -- Last week, the Illinois Senate passed a pro-abortion law even more extreme than New York's, which has energized the pro-life movement and motivated many "pro-choice" Americans to switch sides. The Illinois' "Reproductive Health Act" allows abortion for any reason and at any time during pregnancy. It repeals past state laws governing abortion, including 1) all requirements for spousal consent; 2) waiting periods; 3) parental notification; 4) restrictions on abortion facilities; and 5) procedures for pursuing criminal charges against abortion providers. It declares 6) termination of a pregnancy a "fundamental right;" 7) declares that a "fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus" has no independent rights;" 8) repeals the state's ban on partial-birth abortion; 9) requires insurance companies to provide abortion coverage; 10) requires employers, including churches, to provide employees abortion coverage; 11) allows abortions by non-doctors; 12) allows "kickbacks" for abortion referrals; 13) does not require inspections of abortion facilities; 14) does not require doctors to report injuries; 15) eliminates conscience protections for health care workers; 16) eliminates protections for babies born alive during failed abortions; 17) eliminates requirements to investigate fetal deaths or maternal deaths resulting from abortion; and more. Governor J.B. Pritzker promises to sign the bill.
Meanwhile, 13 states have passed strong pro-life bills this year, several of them "Heartbeat Bills" that make abortion illegal after a baby's heartbeat can be detected. Louisiana's "Heartbeat Bill" was promoted and signed by Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards. Louisiana was the fifth state after Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio to pass such a bill. But Louisiana's pro-life Democrats are not the norm. Pro-life Democrats elsewhere are under extraordinary pressureto conform to the party's pro-abortion platform and yield to activists pushing back hard against the pro-life wave. Hollywood producer and investor Peter Chernin is raising $15 million to help the ACLU fight these recently-passed pro-life laws. The media, while making a huge fuss about the pro-life bills, is under-reporting extreme pro-abortion bills like Illinois' -- apparently, they are not eager to stir more pro-life sentiment. Alabama makes all abortions virtually illegal-- challenging Roe v. Wade at its core. It makes the practice of abortion a felony punishable by up-to life imprisonment, except when the mother's health is at serious risk. Clearly these states want to challenge Roe v. Wade head on. - Lord, thank you for those standing for the sanctity of human life and those you helped win great victories in the states. With 60+ million abortions since 1973 (plus lives lost through infanticide, physician assisted suicide, and euthanasia), the situation is dire. In our moment of truth, help us to reestablish a culture of life. May we rise to the occasion, with prayer and action. Like our fathers, make us willing to give our lives to defeat this evil culture of death for the sake of our "Republic, our religion, our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity"! Gay Pride Month -- It may seem like the U.S. Supreme Court, presidents, big business, academia, and nearly every institution of society -- including many churches -- have embraced the LGBT agenda and are celebrating June as "Gay Pride Month." But God has called His people to stand unbendingly for righteousness. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed to stand a federal appeals court ruling that supported a Pennsylvania school district policy allowing students who identify as transgender to use the bathrooms and locker rooms opposite to their biological sex. Thankfully, despite a reported majority of the leading bishops of the United Methodist Church favoring the pro-homosexual "Way Forward" Plan, the General Conference (laymen and clergy together) voted in February for the church to hold fast to the "Tradition Plan," which aligns to biblical standards of sexuality. However, former Vice President and front runner in the Democratic primary for U.S. President, Joe Biden, announced in a speech to activists at the Human Rights Campaign annual gala in Ohio on Tuesday that LGBTQ rights and the passage of the Equality Act would be his "number one" legislative priority if he is elected president.
The word of God is clear to all Christians. "I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth" (The Apostle Paul - 1 Tim 3:15). With specificity, Jude predicted the shocking spiritual clash we face today. He opened by saying, "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 1:3). Peter wrote, "The word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you" (1 Pet 1:25). - Lord, you made us to be salt and light. Thank you for those who have stood. Only your people can turn this tide of confusion and immorality. Help our pastors and leaders and all believers to be unwavering and assertive in speaking the truth about these issues. Help us to be on the offense, not just the defense. You have made us to be salt and light -- to be a moral compass in our society. Help us to proclaim the fundamental truths of your created order: male, female, and marriage. Help us to love the sexually broken enough to speak your transcendent truth to them in charity. Help us to honor your eternal, moral law. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
